Top Ten Book Covers With Typography that Steals the Show

Posted September 26, 2022 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 15 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic was submitted by Mareli at Elza Reads, and is about typographical book covers. These can be covers with a design that is all or mostly all word-based, covers that have pretty fonts, or just covers that use typography in a creative way. I’m a graphic designer, so this topic speaks to my artistic soul. I LOVE nice fonts and great design/layout, so I’ve decided to showcase book covers with a lovely use of typography that makes the cover extra special.

Take Me Back by Meghan March
This is a simple font, but I love how the “Me” sits right on the horizon line where the water meets the sky. I also love how parts of the typography blend into the scenic surrounding. And the color pops so nicely, too! I love how Meghan March’s name is outlined very subtly in the same green of the water.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
This font is so perfectly chosen for the story (a Beauty and the Beast retelling). I love that some of the letters look like swords, and I love the metallic treatment of the letters. That can be hard to illustrate! And then the way the thorny vines weave in and out? So good.

The Anatomical Shape of a Heart by Jenn Bennett
The way the words all fit so perfectly into a heart shape is just *chef’s kiss*.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber
This is just pretty. The font itself is stunning, but the addition of the ligatures and swirls make quite a statement.

The Last Smile in Sunder City by Luke Arnold
I mean, come on. Look at this. I can’t even talk about it. The way some of the letters run off the page, effectively separating parts of a map is so cool. And the way all the words fit together so perfectly and then the little details on the map themselves? Amazing. There’s so much to look at.

Jana Goes Wild by Farah Heron
Ok, so that’s my name! My name is NEVER in books, much less ON books! But look how cute the font is! I love the woman sitting on the “J” and the giraffe head pocking out of the “d”. And wow, it was a very brave choice to make such a significant drop-shadow, but to ALSO make it 100% opaque AND put a gradient on it? Brave. And it works for me. I love this.

The Hike by Susi Holliday
I feel similarly about this cover as I do the Meghan March cover I mentioned earlier. This is so, so simple but I love how the “The” is rising up from behind the mountain and then how “Hike” is rising out of the water. It just pleases me.

The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn
I love the plaid. Love it.

The Orphan of Cemetery Hill by Hester Fox
Ok. This is a great example of what a good font can do for you. This font, while simple, is beautiful. The structure and the elements are stunning. And then… not much is done to it. It’s white. There’s a lot of leading. The choice of using all-caps at times and regular lowercase/uppercase at times and the italics creates such a simple and elegant composition. I kid you not, I zoomed in to get a better look at the font and THEN I realized there are headstones back there. The font all on its own grabbed me, and it was all I saw.

Not Like the Movies by Kerry Winfrey
This is just so much fun. We’ve got a chaotic mix of different fonts, colors, and font treatments, but all rolled together it works. Super whimsical and fun!

When you think of a book cover that has great typography,
which is the first one that comes to your mind?

Top Ten Books On My Fall 2022 To-Read List

Posted September 19, 2022 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 22 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! I love these seasonal TBR lists even though I’m such a mood reader that I rarely stick to them. lol. It’s fun to make goals, though! And I love looking through my books and getting excited about them all! Fall reading, to me, means atmospheric, cozy, spooky books. I love Gothic romance and mysteries, and I also love contemporary romances with fall settings. Bring on the pumpkin patches, apple orchards, small town fall festivals, etc. These books I’ve selected for this prompt all sound so perfect to me that I might actually make it through them all this season! Can’t wait to break my TBR and visit your posts. I always get great recommendations from you all!

The Last Heir to Blackwood Library by Hester Fox

This one comes out in April, but I just received an ARC and it sounds perfect for cozy fall reading!

In post–World War I England, a young woman inherits a mysterious library and must untangle its powerful secrets…

With the stroke of a pen, twenty-three-year-old Ivy Radcliffe becomes Lady Hayworth, owner of a sprawling estate on the Yorkshire moors. Ivy has never heard of Blackwood Abbey, or of the ancient bloodline from which she’s descended. With nothing to keep her in London since losing her brother in the Great War, she warily makes her way to her new home.

The abbey is foreboding, the servants reserved and suspicious. But there is a treasure waiting behind locked doors—a magnificent library. Despite cryptic warnings from the staff, Ivy feels irresistibly drawn to its dusty shelves, where familiar works mingle with strange, esoteric texts. And she senses something else in the library too, a presence that seems to have a will of its own.

Rumors swirl in the village about the abbey’s previous owners, about ghosts and curses, and an enigmatic manuscript at the center of it all. And as events grow more sinister, it will be up to Ivy to uncover the library’s mysteries in order to reclaim her own story—before it vanishes forever.

Lush, atmospheric and transporting, The Last Heir to Blackwood Library is a skillful reflection on memory and female agency, and a love letter to books from a writer at the height of her power.

Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne

I must admit, I’m a little skeptical of this one. lol. I loved The Hating Game, but I haven’t enjoyed any of Sally’s books since. And this one could be amazing or very weird, so I’m holding out hope but going in a little guarded!

From USA Today bestselling author of The Hating Game Sally Thorne comes something a little unexpected… a historical rom-com that imagines Victor Frankenstein’s sheltered younger sister, and her attempts to create the perfect man.

For generations, every Frankenstein has found their true love and equal, unlocking lifetimes of blissful wedded adventure. Clever, pretty (and odd) Angelika Frankenstein has run out of suitors and fears she may become the exception to this family rule. When assisting in her brother Victor’s ground-breaking experiment to bring a reassembled man back to life, she realizes that having an agreeable gentleman convalescing in the guest suite might be a chance to let a man get to know the real her. For the first time, Angelika embarks upon a project that is all her own.

When her handsome scientific miracle sits up on the lab table, her hopes for an instant romantic connection are thrown into disarray. Her resurrected beau (named Will for the moment) has total amnesia and is solely focused on uncovering his true identity. Trying to ignore their heart-pounding chemistry, Angelika reluctantly joins the investigation into his past, hoping it will bring them closer. But when a second suitor emerges to aid their quest, Angelika wonders if she was too hasty inventing a solution. Perhaps fate is not something that can be influenced in a laboratory? Or is Will (or whatever his name is!) her dream man, tailored for her in every way? And can he survive what was done to him in the name of science, and love?

Filled with carriages, candlesticks, and corpses, Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match is the spooky-season reimagining of the well-known classic that reminds us to never judge a man by his cadaver!

The Blackhouse by Carole Johnstone

A remote village.

A deadly secret.

An outsider who knows the truth…

‘ATMOSPHERIC AND COMPELLING, WITH SOME VERY UNEXPECTED TWISTS!’
Catherine Cooper, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Chalet and The Chateau

Maggie Mackay has been haunted her entire life. No matter what she does, she can’t shake the sense that something is wrong with her. And maybe something is…

When she was five years old, without proof, Maggie announced that someone in the remote village of Blairmore in the Outer Hebrides had murdered a local man, sparking a media storm.

Now, Maggie is determined to discover what really happened and what the villagers are hiding. But everyone has secrets, and some are deadly. As she gets closer to the horrifying truth, Maggie’s own life is in danger…

From the critically-acclaimed author of Mirrorland comes a darkly disturbing new thriller that will chill you to the bone.

The Widow of Rose House by Diana Biller

A young widow restores a dilapidated mansion with the assistance of a charming, eccentric genius, only to find the house is full of dangerous secrets in this effervescent Gilded Age debut novel.

It’s 1875, and Alva Webster has perfected her stiff upper lip after three years of being pilloried in the presses of two continents over fleeing her abusive husband. Now his sudden death allows her to return to New York to make a fresh start, restoring Liefdehuis, a dilapidated Hyde Park mansion, and hopefully her reputation at the same time. However, fresh starts aren’t as easy as they seem, as Alva discovers when stories of a haunting at Liefdehuis begin to reach her. But Alva doesn’t believe in ghosts. So when the eccentric and brilliant professor, Samuel Moore, appears and informs her that he can get to the bottom of the mystery that surrounds Liefdehuis, she turns him down flat. She doesn’t need any more complications in her life―especially not a handsome, convention-flouting, scandal-raising one like Sam.

Unfortunately, though Alva is loath to admit it, Sam, a pioneer in electric lighting and a member of the nationally-adored Moore family of scientists, is the only one who can help. Together, the two delve into the tragic secrets wreathing Alva’s new home while Sam attempts to unlock Alva’s history―and her heart.

Set during the Gilded Age in New York City, The Widow of Rose House is a gorgeous debut by Diana Biller, with a darkly Victorian Gothic flair and an intrepid and resilient American heroine guaranteed to delight readers.

Lost Among the Living by Simone St. James

England, 1921. Three years after her husband, Alex, disappeared, shot down over Germany, Jo Manders still mourns his loss. Working as a paid companion to Alex’s wealthy, condescending aunt, Dottie Forsyth, Jo travels to the family’s estate in the Sussex countryside. But there is much she never knew about her husband’s origins…and the revelation of a mysterious death in the Forsyths’ past is just the beginning…

All is not well at Wych Elm House. Dottie’s husband is distant, and her son was grievously injured in the war. Footsteps follow Jo down empty halls, and items in her bedroom are eerily rearranged. The locals say the family is cursed, and that a ghost in the woods has never rested. And when Jo discovers her husband’s darkest secrets, she wonders if she ever really knew him. Isolated in a place of deception and grief, she must find the truth or lose herself forever.

And then a familiar stranger arrives at Wych Elm House…

A Pumpkin and a Patch by Jennifer Peel

Every person has that one thing they’re known for, and it doesn’t matter what you do, that one thing—whether good or bad—follows you around like a bloodhound for the rest of your life. For me it’s a story I wrote when I was fifteen. Forever more I will be known as the Reece the Rogue Pirate girl, instead of Josie Peterson. Why couldn’t I be known for all the cute children’s stories I’ve written about my family’s pumpkin patch?

Tragically, the torrid story I wrote as a teen was based on a real person, Reece Cavanaugh. And guess what? He grew up to be a pirate—okay, lawyer. Same thing. To make matters worse, the man is representing my ex-fiancé who wants to steal my treasure, aka engagement ring. If that wasn’t the icing on the cake, Reece has an adorable daughter who happens to be my new student. That’s right, I must now have actual conversations with him after avoiding him for half my life, even by hiding behind banana displays when needed. But the more I get to know Reece—the real version, not the imaginary one who ravishes me on sandy beaches—I can’t help but wish we could roll around in the sand together. There’s a problem though, the school I work for frowns upon relationships between parents and teachers. And it’s pumpkin season, which means all my free time is spent on the family farm. But when he kisses me, I can’t help wanting to break all the rules and get tangled up in the barn. The burning question is, am I brave enough to make my story a reality or will it be another bad ending?

From USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Peel comes a curl your toes and cuddle up with your favorite blanket and cocoa romantic comedy.

A Sweet Alaskan Fall by Jennifer Snow

A split-second decision could change both their lives for the better…if they let it.

Montana Banks has returned to Wild River, Alaska, for a fresh start. Adventure has always been in her blood, but while an injury leaves her unable to participate in her favorite extreme sports, Montana settles for teaching base-jumping classes at her friend’s tour company. Settling in has been almost too easy: a great job, her family’s acceptance and her own apartment—right next door to straitlaced police officer Eddie Sanders.

Eddie has always had feelings for Montana, and now that he’s leaving for a new job in Anchorage he wonders if he should’ve taken a chance with her sooner. Then a moment of violence the night of his going-away party leaves him badly wounded. Seeing Eddie’s job opportunity lost and self-confidence following close behind, Montana is determined to show him all the reasons he has to pick himself up again.

The Café Between Pumpkin and Pie by Marina Adair, Kate Angell, and Stacy Finz

In Moonbright, Maine, there’s a pumpkin on every porch, fresh brewed apple cider in every cup–and the sweetest sorcery in the air…

Before, after, and even during the excitement of the annual Halloween parade, gathering at the Corner Café is a beloved Moonbright tradition. Costumed revelers of all kinds come for the famous whoopie pies, the heartfelt hospitality, and the chance to hear the town’s spookiest stories and local legends whispered to the younger generation…

The most magically romantic legend of all promises that a Moonbright woman will marry the man she sees reflected in a mirror on Halloween. For three such singles, the crunch of fall leaves and the fragrance of fresh-baked pie sets the perfect stage for this most tantalizing trick–and most delightful treat–the genuine enchantment of true love.

The Water Witch by Jessica Thorne

Sitting side by side on the clifftop, he turns to her solemnly and says, ‘The water witch is real.’ She rolls her eyes and grins, teasing him. ‘Sure. A psycho mermaid. Got it.’ But now he’s gone forever… will she find the truth beneath the waves?

Brittany, France. Ariadne Walker’s fiancé Simon drowned in the stormy Atlantic Ocean doing what he loved: searching for the lost underwater city of Ys. Local legend says it was destroyed centuries ago when the princess of Ys became a water witch, cursing the name of the man who betrayed her.

Ari never believed these tall tales. And the letter Simon sent before he died finishing their relationship is a devastating secret she’ll take to the grave. But arriving in Brittany, Ari encounters a man emerging from the sea in a rocky cove, saltwater dripping from his dark hair. Rafael swears the legends are true: and his ancestor was cursed by the water witch. Now, his own life is in terrible danger. And the secret to breaking the curse lies hidden in the lost city.

When Ari finds a cryptic map and a golden mask of a woman’s face amongst Simon’s things, she has no choice but to believe Rafael’s plea. Can they follow the trail and save Rafael’s life? Pouring over the map by candlelight, the flickering flames only add to the heat between them… but will Ari’s fragile heart soon be shattered all over again? And will they ever find Ys and break the curse – or will the water witch demand another sacrifice?

An absolutely addictive romantic fantasy read filled with passion and mystery, that will sweep you away to the wild coast of northern France. Filled with real myths and legends from this magical place, The Water Witch is perfect for fans of Luanne G. Smith, River of Shadows and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller

During ball season, anything can happen, even love.

It’s ball season in Vienna, and Maria Wallner only wants one thing: to restore her family’s hotel, the Hotel Wallner, to its former glory. She’s not going to let anything get in her way – not her parents’ three-decade-long affair; not seemingly-random attacks by masked assassins; and especially not the broad-shouldered American foreign agent who’s saved her life two times already. No matter how luscious his mouth is.

Eli Whittaker also only wants one thing: to find out who is selling American secret codes across Europe, arrest them, and go home to his sensible life in Washington, DC. He has one lead – a letter the culprit sent from a Viennese hotel. But when he arrives in Vienna, he is immediately swept up into a chaotic whirlwind of balls, spies, waltzes, and beautiful hotelkeepers who seem to constantly find themselves in danger. He disapproves of all of it! But his disapproval is tested as he slowly falls deeper into the chaos – and as his attraction to said hotelkeeper grows.

What are you excited to read this fall?

Top Ten Books with Geographical Terms in the Title

Posted September 12, 2022 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 10 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic was submitted by Lisa of Hopewell, and is Books with Geographical Terms in the Title. I love geography and nature, so this topic sounds pretty fun to me. I found a really great list of geographic terms here to help get the brainstorm going, but some of my favorites are: mountain, island, bay, lake, beach, coast, hamlet, and ocean. I recommend logging into Goodreads and searching your shelves or their book database with some of your favorite terms and see what pops up. You might be surprised how many you’ve read or want to read. I hope you have fun with one! Plus it seems easier than some, which is awesome because it’s a struggle to drag myself away from Disney Dreamlight Valley on the Switch right now! Is anyone else playing and loving this??

1. On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves
2. The Secret Cove in Croatia by Julie Caplin
3. Stranger In the Lake by Kimberly Belle
4. Winter at the Beach by Shelia Roberts
5. The Beekeeper at Elderflower Grove by Jaimie Admans
6. Highland Knight by Cindy Miles
7. The Inn at Ocean’s Edge by Colleen Coble
8. By Love or by Sea by Rachel Harlin
9. Sandpiper Shore by Debbie Mason
10. The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey

There were SO many titles I could choose from, so I kind of gravitated towards the ones I never see anyone talking about online (well, except for On the Island, but I had to include at least one favorite!). Have you read any of these?

Top Ten Books I Received for Review That I Loved So Much I Bought a Copy for My Personal Library

Posted September 5, 2022 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 14 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic was submitted by Alecia @ The Staircase Reader, and features books I loved so much that I had to buy a copy for my personal library. I chose to narrow the scope of the topic a little bit and only share books I’ve received for review over the years. Some of these were so amazing that I bought a physical copy and an audiobook copy!

1. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
After reading this, I had to have the hardback and I have since bought the audio and now there’s a new dramatized version with sound effects and I had to have that, too!

2. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

3. Eighty Days to Elsewhere by K.C. Dyer
Another one I adored and had to have the paperback and the audio!

4. Well Played by Jen DeLuca

5. The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss
This is one of my favorite Christmas books, and the audio is so so magical. I actually listened to the audio first and then bought the paperback for my collection.

6. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
I received each book in this series for review as they were released (my name is even in some of them!) and I swear, I own them all in so many different formats that it’s not even funny. LOVE this series.

7. Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard
This book changed my life, and I had to have the finished hardback.

8. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
My ARC didn’t even have a cover, so of course I had to get the hardback when it was all finished. This book is perfection.

9. Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch
Sooooo many warm fuzzies for this book. And when I saw this pretty UK cover I knew it was meant to be a part of my library. And yes, I’ve seen the recently released movie and it was wonderful!

10. Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco
This book is amazing and one of my favorite books to read during the spooky season, so I had to get in on audio even though my ARC sits prettily on my shelf!

Do you enjoy building your physical book collection as much as I do?
Do you collect the books you plan to re-read someday?
