Top Ten Books I’d Want With Me While Stranded On a Deserted Island

Posted July 26, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 16 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is books I’d want with me while stranded on a deserted island! I don’t know why, but being stranded on an island somewhere sounds kind of appealing. Maybe it’s the 17 months of isolation or the fact that I can’t travel right now… or that I’m going stir crazy in this house of mine… or all three (lol), but I think I’d like a couple days on this island to read and relax. Here are the books I’d want with me!

The Survival Guides

I don’t want to be stranded unprepared!
I did a little research, and these titles are highly rated and look like they would be very helpful.

1. The Survival Medicine Handbook by Joseph Alton & Amy Alton
2. Survival Hacks
by Creek Stewart

The Motivation & Commiseration Titles

I love survival stories, both non-fiction and fiction, and I think it would be nice to read about people who’ve been there.

3. On the Island
by Tracey Garvis-Graves
4. The Martian by Andy Weir
5. Whiteout by Adriana Anders
6. 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea by Jonathan Franklin

The I Can’t-Live-Without-You Favorites

This was really hard, but I chose a title from each genre I love: contemporary romance, Christmas (it’s a genre, ok?), Mystery/Thriller, and Fantasy.

7. The Unhoneymooners
by Christina Lauren
8. Christmas At Frozen Falls by Kiley Dunbar
9. Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
10. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

And My Kindle, with Everything Else!

I’m so bad at this game. I tried, trust me!
Which books would you want with you while stranded on a deserted island?

Top Ten Amazing Books I Wish I’d Been Able to Read In One Sitting

Posted July 19, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 11 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is about books that really should be read in one sitting. Perhaps they’re super suspenseful or utterly romantic or just plain exciting, and you could not bring yourself to put it down until it was over. I usually don’t have the luxury of reading a book in one sitting. I’m kind of a slow reader (I know some of you who read a book or two a day and I’m in awe), and I require sleep and I have to do all kinds of life things, so I chose to feature books I wish I could have read in one sitting because they were too good to tear myself away from!

The Winter King by C.L. Wilson
I’m reading this one now, but it’s sooooo long so it’s taking me forever!
But it’s amazing and I just want to quit everything and finish it!

Hotshot Doc by R.S. Grey
I got invested in the story and the romantic tension SO FAST and then I was a goner.

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
This was a super compelling mystery that got a little too intriguing for me to want to go to sleep.

Rolling In the Deep by Mira Grant
I was so unbelievably captivated by this story that I actually did read this in one sitting
and then read a bunch of the next book right after. SO GOOD.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
This book is so funny and delightful, and the most amazing vacation.

Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco
The atmosphere is intoxicating.

Till Death by Jennifer L. Armentrout
This book is scary and intense and wonderful, and I HAD TO KNOW.

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
This was so unsettling that I just needed to keep going until I finished it.

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
All the heart eyes for this book! It’s just so good, and scary. So, you know, no sleeping.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
I love this book so so much. I’ve read it twice and still had a hard time putting it down on that second time!

What books have you read in one sitting (or wished you could)?

1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, this author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London's most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry.
And in truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better...
—Lady Whistledown's Society Papers,
April 1814

But this time, the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn't just decided to marry—he's even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended's older sister, Kate Sheffield—the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate is the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams...

Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands—and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate is determined to protect her sister—but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony's lips touch hers, she's suddenly afraid she might not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself...

This second book in the Bridgertons series is an enemies to lovers story about a reformed rake that I really enjoyed! I quite liked Anthony in the first book, so I was excited to read his story (and more from Lady Whistledown because she is hilarious). Anthony has chosen his bride, but her sister Kate keeps getting in the way of their courtship. I loved Kate and her little corgi, Newton. She is strong and can fend for herself in any situation. The banter between her and Anthony was great, and I found this story to be funnier than the first one (even though it starts off with one of the saddest prologues ever). There’s a scene where Kate gets stung by a bee that was adorably funny. There’s another scene with a runaway Newton that had me giggling as well. Oh, and Kate goes to play Pall Mall (it sounds similar to croquet) with all the Bridgertons and it was hilarious. There were so many fun scenes in this book! We also see depth from Anthony as he struggles with anxiety regarding his late father. It was a nice, well-rounded romance with characters I really fell for. The Viscount Who Loved Me was so romantic and swoony, and I’m completely addicted to this series. I love the Bridgerton family, and can’t wait to watch more of them fall in love!

Top Ten Book Titles That Ask Questions

Posted July 12, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 15 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic features book titles that ask questions or have question marks in them. This was trickier than I anticipated, and lots of book with questions in the titles are children’s books! I had fun hunting for titles, though, and I hope you did too!

1. Can You Keep a Secret? By Sophie Kinsella

2. Do You Want to Start a Scandal? By Tessa Dare
(It really bugs me that there’s no question mark on the cover or Goodreads, because this is definitely a question!)

3. Are You My Mother?  By P.D. Eastman
(I had to include a children’s book because this one is so adorable and I loved it as a kid.)

4. Isn’t It Bromantic? by Lyssa Kay Adams

5. Where Are You Now? by Mary Higgins Clark

6. What Would Jane Austen Do? by Laurie Brown

7. Your Room Or Mine? by Charlotte Phillips

8. Do You Believe in Santa? by Sierra Donovan

9. Who’s That Girl? by Mhairi McFarlane

10. Have We Met? by Camille Baker

What questions are your book covers asking you?

It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on.

I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

And then somehow we keep talking…ALL NIGHT. We’re both insomniacs, so talking all night soon turns into talking EVERY night.

And talking about nothing soon turns into talking about something.

And here we go from in-depth analysis of reality TV to my relationship with my family to his amazing artwork. There’s no topic we don’t cover…

Except for who I really am. It’s the only question of his I won’t answer.

As my crush turns into an avalanche of Eliot, I think of him all the time now. But if he knew who I was, the entire house of cards we’ve built this relationship on would come toppling down. I want him to be mine, but we might never be more than just a sweet dream….

I absolutely adored Call Me Maybe, so I was extremely excited when I saw that a second book was out! I didn’t even know this was going to be a series! I immediately dropped what I was reading and started listening to Sweet Talk. Spoiler alert: I loved it!

This book is about Eliot and a mystery woman that he accidentally voice texts late one night. The pair met once upon a time for some reason, exchanged numbers for some reason, and that was that. Eliot has no idea who she is. He entered her name into his phone as a jumble of letters that he can’t decipher, and she enjoys talking to her crush anonymously so much that she refuses to tell him who she is. This accidental text leads to a very sweet, flirty friendship that eventually turns into a deeper connection. She calls him by his last name, Hoffman, so he decides to call her by the last two letters of the name he entered for her, J.D. Their voice texting quickly transitions into nightly phone calls during insomnia hour. They watch TV together and help each other fall asleep. It’s pretty adorable. Eliot is falling for her and so badly wants to know who she is (so do readers!) but she feels like he would be disappointed if he knew her identity, so she never plans to reveal herself. This is such a unique premise, right? I loved the mystery and the cuteness of it all.

Eliot is very, very good. You’ll remember him as Vera’s brother if you listened to Call Me Maybe. He’s so sweet and caring and adorable. He promises J.D. that he will not to not try and find out who she is… and then he doesn’t try to find out who she is. They decide to go to the same club one night and not see each other, but just dance and have fun talking on the phone. J.D. arrives first and watches him show up. When he does, he won’t look around. His eyes are on the ground, and that just melted me. He’s so trustworthy, not wanting to push her or make her feel uncomfortable. That’s a constant trend throughout the whole book. He wants to be there for her and know her, but he cares even more that she’s ok. He’s a graphic designer, who secretly writes the most popular webcomic ever and I just loved his slightly nerdy personality. His insomnia is caused by past trauma, and I felt like the author handled it with sensitivity and compassion. Eliot is just great, and the narrator who voiced him was perfect. Chris Brinkley has a very soft, sweet voice and speaks with a sensitive and caring tone. He brings Eliot to life, and without him I don’t know that I would have loved Eliot as much.

J.D. is great, too! She wears combat boots and goes to a boxing gym, and is so tough and strong. At the same time, she’s a soft daddy’s girl and has a tender and caring side. Eliot has his struggles and she does, too. She’s grappling with the fact that her dad is terminally ill with cancer and in an assisted living facility. She uproots her own life to move into his apartment and take over his job because he loved it so much. Her mom left them, and her brother is constantly in and out of trouble, so the two of them have clung to one another for love and support. They talk on the phone all the time, and he’s just the best dad ever. She’s also dealing with some insecurities about whether or not she is Eliot’s type and is scared to ever let him find out who she is for multiple reasons, and I found her to be very relatable. Lidia Dornet did such a great job playing J.D. She has that tough voice with a little New York swag to it, and it embodies J.D.’s character perfectly.

I loved the chemistry between Eliot and J.D. Their banter had me grinning from ear to ear. I love that they bond on the phone and allow the connection to grow without the distraction that a physical relationship can sometimes create. They talk about deep, important things and connect quickly. Cara Bastone did a great job balancing the deeper, sadder topics with humor and lightness. I never felt depressed, even though I easily could have. She also did a great job keeping J.D.’s identity a secret from her readers (or at least this reader). I had no idea who she was until just moments before the reveal. It was so much fun to try and figure out the mystery.

There are maaaaaajor spoilers for Call Me Maybe in Sweet Talk, so if you have any interest in listening to the first book you absolutely must before you listen to this one. This story happens at the same time as Call Me Maybe, and this book spoils the ending of that one. I found it really fun to get a bit of a third perspective on Vera’s love story through Eliot’s point of view and enjoyed reliving her story for a little while. As with Call Me Maybe, I loved all the sound effects. You can hear computer keys clicking, New York buzzing by when the characters are outside, water running when they brush their teeth, etc. It felt like I was listening to a movie. Audible is doing such great things with their Originals line! I am enjoying so many of them.

All in all, Sweet Talk was adorable. I’m becoming more and more convinced that I need to read Cara Bastone’s Forever Yours series. I’ve been a little scared of this series because the synopses sound like they tackle heavier issues than the romances I typically grab for, but Sweet Talk did too and I loved it. Maybe she will balance those heavier issues out with the kind of humor she has written into this audiobook series. If so, I know I’ll love it. She writes such amazing romantic relationships and characters, and I’m excited to read more of them from her!
