Welcome to another TTT! Don’t panic! This week’s topic is Characters Iād Like to go on Vacation With, but I’m feeling uninspired. My favorite travel companion is my mom, and she’s always who I will have the most fun traveling with! So I’ve tweaked the topic! I’m sticking with the vacation theme, but instead I’m sharing some of my favorite books I’ve read while on vacation. I’m going to tell you where I was, too! And yes, my mom was there for all of them. My mom’s birthday is tomorrow, so happy birthday Mom!
I love reading travel-themed books, low-angst romances, and books that take place in tropical locations while I’m on vacation. I also love reading mysteries and thrillers because I’m sharing a room with people and don’t have to feel scared sleeping in a room alone. lol. My favorite method of travel is cruises, so the bulk of these books were read while I was either traveling to/from or on a cruise ship. I love getting off the ship in port to soak in the new and exciting locations (and I love shopping), but sea days make the best reading days!
1. The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler
I was in Seaside, California. My mom, sister, and I traveled to Monterey to go whale watching, hang out at Fisherman’s Wharf, visit the aquarium, and eat lots of yummy food. I read this book every night in the hotel room before bed.
2. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
I read this while on the plane home from a family wedding in North Carolina. There had been some mix-ups with the airline and my mom and I were upgraded to first class!
3. Delirium by Lauren Oliver
I read the bulk of this poolside while at sea on a cruise! The very bottom of each page is slightly rippled from getting wet when I rested it on my stomach, and there’s some saltiness to the pages. It’s so much fun to open it up and remember where I was!
4. Girl At Sea by Maureen Johnson
I read this while on a transatlantic cruise from Florida to Italy, which was so perfect because this book takes place on a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea. I remember sitting on my balcony reading about the characters sailing on the Mediterranean Sea while I was sailing on it, too. I couldn’t have planned it better!
5. Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
Also on a cruise with this one. Since I never get internet packages while on cruises, I had made a list a few days before we left of books on my Kindle that I thought would be fun to read while on board. I had my sister select from the list because I was having trouble making decisions. This was a creepy thriller, and I was so glad I had her in my cabin with me because I wouldn’t have been able to sleep otherwise!
6. Moonlight Sins by Jennifer Armentrout
Another cruise read, and I ended up binging this series back to back to back!
7. Roman Crazy by Alice Clayton and Nina Bocci
I said this list was mostly books I read while on a cruise. lol. I love reading books about people on vacation while I’m on vacation, so this one was really fun!
8. I Temporarily Do by Ellie Cahill
Cruise. I LOVED this book so much that I read the second one right away.
9. Till Death by Jennifer Armentrout
This is another good thriller (well, romantic suspense in this case) to read when you’re not sleeping in a room alone! I read this on a… you guessed it: cruise.
10. All By Myself, Alone by Mary Higgins-Clark
My mom and I always made a point of reading an MHC book on a trip together. I might have read this one on a plane to a cruise? LOL.
The novel by Maureen isn’t familiar to me, but it sounds interesting. Definitely one I should look up on Goodreads. Hope your mom has a great birthday and you have a fun trip planned soon. :)
Thank you, Rissi! Girl at Sea seems to be one of Maureen’s less popular books, but it’s actually the only one of hers I’ve read! It’s been at least 12 years since I read it, and I can still remember it vividly. I highly recommend it!
I am not feeling the list this week, either, but I love that is room for twists on this place.
Yes! I fully encourage putting twists on topics you’re not feeling. Even though I came up with this topic, I wasn’t in the mood to write it at all so I get it! lol.
Oh nice topic twist! I honestly can’t get much reading done when I’m on vacation. I do try to read for a bit when I’m on a plane or riding in the car, but eventually, travel anxiety creeps in and I end up not reading. Then when I get to wherever I’m going, I don’t have time to pick up a book! Nice titles though! Happy to see Poison Study among them! :)

A cruise is really the only vacation that allows me time to read. I sit in the shade on my balcony and read the day away, rather than going to the pool or wandering around among the people on the ship. I love my solitude! If I go anywhere else, I’m so busy all day and so tired by bedtime that I get pretty much no reading done at all. lol. I also get car sick, so road trip reading is out for me.
Such a lovely list. I love how those books have brought back memories. I know that we did take books on holiday but I don’t really remember them (maybe Night Circus in France or Italy?). I do know that having a black book cover reading in the sun isn’t great š
Holiday generally for me means non stop doing stuff so reading doesn’t really get done š
I’ve never been on a cruise but it is on my to do list!

Oh goodness, a black cover in the sun doesn’t sound ideal at all! lol. Cruises are really the only vacation I get a lot of reading done. We always book balcony cabins and I sit out there all day reading, in lieu of going to the pool because I burn so easily. If I go anywhere else, I’m also too busy to read and usually fall into bed at night without reading at all because I’m so tired! I definitely recommend going on a cruise. I never feel more relaxed. :) I hope you can go on one someday!

It’s definitely a favorite of mine that I need to re-read someday! I wish the series had continued! I love travel-themed books.
I think it’s great that you 1) travel with your mom! and 2) remember what you read and WHERE. I couldn’t even begin to remember!
It helps that I always log the dates I read books! But sometimes a situation is so unique or special to me that I remember everything about it! Books I was reading, clothes I was wearing, conversations I had, music I listened to while reading, etc.
I love that you remember the books you read on the trips you read them on. I don’t remember most of mine, but that’s normal because I don’t have a very good memory for books anyway unless I make notes! I’ve been wanting to read Poison Study from your list. So many books!!
Some books really stick themselves to memories for me, but not all of them do! Poison Study was one of them because I was in such a unique situation flying first class like that. And the book I read while cruising the Med because, again, that was a once in a lifetime experience for me! I log the dates I read books on Goodreads, so I actually went back and matched up my books with previous trips in order to help me remember enough to be able to come up with ten titles. lol. I loved Poison Study, but never ended up continuing the series for some reason. I guess I had too many things to read! Now I’ve forgotten the entirety of the story and am not sure I want to re-read in in preparation to continue the series. I guess we’ll see!
Fun list! I love that you have good vacation memories of these books. I want to make one suggestion, though: don’t read Ruth Ware’s The Woman in Cabin Ten while on a cruise. I read that one shortly after getting home from a cruise, and I was SO GLAD I waited and didn’t read it while on the ship. Would have been much spookier!
See, I love themed reads! I remember while reading The Woman in Cabin Ten that I wish I’d read it on a cruise instead! I read a somewhat similarly themed book by Mary Higgins Clark, All By Myself Alone, while on a cruise and loving it even more because being on a ship upped the spooky factor for me! I am apparently fearless when I’m vacationing and rooming with family. LOL. Once I’m home, though, all bets are off. I’m a major chicken in my real life.
I love that you read thrillers while on vacation because you’re not alone so you won’t get as scared. So great!

lol. I am such a chicken, Susan! When I was younger I remember calling my little sister’s cell phone in the middle of the night because I had to go to the bathroom and was too creeped out by my book to walk down the dark hall. She had to guard the door for me. LOL
I want to read Riley Sager’s works!
He is one of my favorite mystery authors!
