Welcome to another TTT! And happy October!! This week’s topic is: Books I Read/Avoided Because of the Hype (and did you make the right choice?). Hyped books usually go one of two ways for me: I either love it or I hate it. Sometimes a synopsis sounds too good and the hype is so huge that I fear missing out on what everyone’s talking about and eventually give in. And sometimes I seriously don’t care. But I’m focusing this week on the books I read!
1. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (SO worth the hype.)
2. The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas (This is cheating since there are 7 books but oh well. Extremely worth the hype. My favorite of the series, Hello Stranger, is pictured.)
3. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne (I loved this at the time, but I don’t know if I still would now because I’ve had a major falling out with enemies to lovers.)
4. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas (This was so far off my radar until the book review world went bonkers. I begged the publicist for an ARC and she sent it, and it was amazing. I suppose I was part of the hype for this one!)
5. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (I saw the cover and thought no way. The title? Too cheesy. I wasn’t into YA contemporary romance at all. But I finally gave it and I LOVED it. And it changed my reading tastes forever!)
6. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (I thought the idea of teens killing each other while the entire world watched like it was a reality TV show made me sick, but I got way too curious. Loved it.)
7. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (I hate crying. I hate death. This one hurt me a lot, but it was beautiful.)
8. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer (I LOVED IT. And it got me reading for fun!)
9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling (I read this for the first time in 2014… and honestly, it was required reading for one of my classes in grad school so I guess I’m cheating here. lol. It was a cute story, but I have never had even an inkling of interest in continuing the series or watching the movies or falling into the fandom.)
10. Roomies by Christina Lauren (I read this for the authors, actually, and not the book itself. I’d been hearing about their books for so long! I love them!!)

I should have added ‘Anna’ to my list! That one was largely hype (unless my memory is failing me) though it was also one I did quite enjoy. :)
An interesting list. I randomly found A Court of Thorns and Roses as a gift for a friend’s birthday. She said you have to read it and lent it to me. I enjoyed it then thought nothing of the rest of the series until it all blew up and I loved them all 😂
Harry Potter I am a fan. It took me a couple of years as I was 7 when it first came out but by book 4 I was getting them on Publication Day 🤣

I was 10 when Harry Potter came out, and I remember going to the Scholastic Book Fair at school and all my friends were talking about it so I ended up buying it because of peer pressure but then donated it a few years later when I still hadn’t read it yet. LOL. I think I’d feel differently about the series now if I had read them as a kid, but I just couldn’t capture the magic as a 20-something reading it for a class on YA lit. lol. Plus I’d heard some sad spoilers and decided it was better to quit before I was emotionally smashed by them anyway. :’)

I’m smacking myself about Fourth Wing! Although I did order that like the day it released and I feel like that was lowkey before the hype began. Took me a few months to read though and I still need to read Iron Flame. I’m hoping to tackle that one in December so I don’t have to wait long with the cliffhanger that I know is there! Lol.

Totally hear you on The Hunger Games one making you a bit sick xD It’s definitely disturbing at its core despite how it feels more normal now from its popularity. I didn’t read HP until an adult but I wonder if I’d have been the same as you if it were required reading? :o

I love your comments on HP–I “liked” the ones I read—the first one was cute. I’ve seen the movies because my kids were the right age when they came out. But the whole HP phenomenon? Didn’t see that coming! The books got a huge boost in the USA by religious fanatics opposing them. I don’t get the cos-play or the belief that they are the best children’s books ever.
Ahhh, I love The Hunger Games! I also really enjoy the HP books and movies but I’ve never been huge into the fandom and now I’m glad!
I bought a copy of FOURTH WING even though it really doesn’t sound like my kind of thing because of FOMO and it’s still sitting on my shelf. I’m still not sure it’s something I want to read. It might end up in my Little Free Library instead. Ha ha.

Love your hype-worthy picks! Fourth Wing was absolutely worth the buzz – couldn’t put it down. But your Anna and the French Kiss mention resonated most; that book unexpectedly stole my heart too! Sometimes the hype gets it right.
Ahhhhh Fourth Wing lives in my head rent free. I love that Anna did the same thing for you! It’s so, so sweet and I’ve been wondering if a re-read is in order. It’s been so long since I read it!
