How the moose (almost) stole Christmas.

Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can't stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana's determined to prove that she belongs...even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town's hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.

And really...how hard could it be?

The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it's not getting any easier now that his dream girl's back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it's clear she needs help, fast...and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It's an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong...together.

It’s no secret that I love this Moose Springs, Alaska series by Sarah Morgenthaler, and now is the perfect time to talk about the second book (even though I reviewed 1 and 3 a couple years ago) because it’s the most adorable Christmas romance! Upon finishing I immediately got the audio version so I can listen while baking, wrapping presents, or crocheting Christmas ornaments. Mistletoe and Mr. Right is such a warm, happy, funny, festive read and I will recommend it (and the other books in this series) all day long.

I loved Lana as soon as I met her in The Tourist Attraction, so I was delighted to see her get her own love story this go around. I was also extremely excited to return to Moose Springs and see Zoey, Graham, and all my other favorite people who live there. Lana and Rick have the cutest relationship. I loved watching it all unfold. They are definitely proof that opposites really do attract. Lana is spunky extroverted heiress from the big city and Rick is a quiet, small town single guardian of the sweetest kid. He’s head over heels for Lana already and she hasn’t quite noticed him yet. They kind of go from acquaintances to friends to flirty friends to lovers, and I loved their journey. The moose story is silly, but wonderful. And oh my gosh, there’s this weird squirrel B&B that had me laughing so hard that I had to immediately write to the author.

I don’t want to talk too much, because everything feels like a spoiler to me. But bottom line, you need to read this series. It’s filled with beautiful Alaskan scenery, moose, super down-to-earth characters, small town friendships among the townspeople (everyone knows your name, essentially), and so much heart and humor. I can’t wait for more Sarah Morgenthaler books.

A Christmas Eve ball.
A light-hearted beauty.
An earl who needs to come in from the cold.

All year long, Chloe Garland’s been trading witty remarks and heated glances with her nemesis, the arrogant Lord Cheverell. But when Chloe tricks him into wearing a hideous waistcoat—complete with sequins, pompoms, and jingle bells—to her family’s Christmas Eve party, she may have gone too far. Her penalty? A single, scorching kiss—and a Christmas gift she never expected.

Love.

I love Tessa Dare, and I’ve been suffering patiently waiting for her next release so I was excited to stumble upon this short story that I had heard absolutely nothing about! When She Was Naughty is a cute, festive, bite-sized story that’s perfect to curl up with on a snowy night! Our heroine, Chloe, tricks Lord Cheverell into wearing the ugliest Christmas waistcoat ever to her family’s fancy ball because she thinks he hates her. The description of this thing is just wonderfully horrible, and I love it so much! In reality, he’s been in love with her for months and this trick has him thinking she hates him. There’s not a lot of depth or angst, just some witty banter, a prank gone wrong, some misunderstandings, a few swoons, and a big dose of festive cheer.

I left this book with a big smile on my face, and that’s really all I ask of a Christmas book. Do I wish it was longer and more developed? Yes. But I wholeheartedly enjoyed what I was given. I highly recommend checking out When She Was Naughty if you need a little pick-me-up and a reminder that Christmas is the most wonderful (and romantic) time of the year!

"Get Sleighed"

When my ex dumped me right before Christmas, I was left with a luxury: an all-expense paid trip for two to Cabo—private jet and all. Somehow, my best friend roped me into giving away the other half of the trip as a contest prize on her podcast. Kelly won the “World’s Worst Dump Story”. She and I didn’t meet until we arrived at the airport, which was when I discovered she was actually a he. Apparently, we’d forgotten to include open-to-women-only in the rules. My trip to Cabo started as a disaster, but as time went on Kelly and I grew close. Until someone unexpectedly showed up....

"Lights Out Love"

Cole is utterly annoyed by his neighbor Josie’s obnoxious Christmas display. When she blows out power on the street, he marches over and lets her know what he thinks of the mess she’s made. But when the only generator in town brings the two nemeses together...the Christmas display isn’t the only thing burning bright.

"Hot Item"

Getting into a fight with a sexy stranger over the last hot toy on the shelf was not the way I intended to spend Christmas Eve. And I certainly didn’t plan on spending hours more trying to win a contest to decide who would get to buy it. But when our time is up, would the toy be the only hot item I wanted to take home?

I’ve listened to a few Christmas audiobooks written by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward over the years, and they’re always fun! I was excited to see this one pop up on Audible one day. I hadn’t even heard of it so it was a nice surprise! This was a short and sweet listen that I enjoyed crocheting to for a few hours!

It’s hard to review three short stories, so I’ll just be short and sweet with my review as well! The first novella is called “Get Sleighed“, and it was fun! I thought the idea of having a contest to give away the second half of a vacation after being dumped by the guy you were supposed to go with was a cute idea. I enjoyed my little jaunt to Cabo and had fun hearing about what our hero and heroine (I cannot for the life of me remember their names) did while they were there vacationing. The romance was super sweet. My favorite part was the contest itself. Contestants had to call in to a podcast and share their worst getting dumped story. Some of those stories were hilarious and very entertaining!

The second novella, “Lights Out Love“, was cute, but not my favorite. Josie loves decorating the outside of her house with millions of lights for Christmas. Cole can’t stand having the light pour into his house like the noonday sun every night. Then the power goes out (of course Cole assumes it’s totally Josie’s fault) and he’s even more upset! But Josie, being the kind soul that she is, lets him benefit from her generator and has him over so he can charge his computer and get work done. They strike up a friendship, and Cole softens to her. She de-Scrooges him a little. It’s a very happy, heartwarming story!

The last novella, “Hot Item“, has my heart and really made this book for me. Two people in search of the hottest toy of the season have to battle it out to see who gets to buy it when the manager can’t deal with their arguing. So they spend the evening wrapping presents for charity and whoever gets the most tips wins the right to buy it. They talk a lot and it was all just very sweet. I got a little teary-eyed (in a good way). Really loved this story!

All in all, I had fun with Sleighed! I loved all the narrators (so many of them are my favorites), and it was fun to listen while I crocheted Christmas presents! It was like listening to a movie. Definitely give it a try if you’re in the mood for something short and festive that will make you smile!

One little white lie.

That's all it took. Now I'm suddenly having to fake-date my work nemesis to get me through a week at a Vermont Christmas lodge with my family.

The problem? I can't stand Miles Taylor. Not only that, but I don't date people I work with. But I can handle it. I've had practice faking my emotions for years. So it shouldn't matter that Miles never lets me get away with anything. And that he happens to boil my blood hotter than a steaming pot of wassail. So when he throws his annoying grin my way or forces me on dates he knows I'll hate, I'll just grit my teeth and smile.

Or maybe not. Did I mention that Miles is the one person in the world I can't seem to fool?

When my emotions begin feeling less like a sham and his arms feel way too comfortable, it makes me think that maybe Miles had a plan of his own. And I'm starting to like it a lot more than mine.

★ Faking Christmas is a sweet, closed door romance full of sizzle, witty banter, and chemistry, but without explicit content.

I’ve been having so much fun with the Christmas Escape series this year! This series consists of 7 full-length, standalone novels that are all super swoony closed-door romances. In each story, someone is trying to escape something in their lives, whether it be the holidays themselves or someone/something in their life. One book was released per week, starting on October 16th, 2022 and ending on November 30th, 2022. And, as of right now, they’re all on Kindle Unlimited! Faking Christmas was the one I was most excited about, because I love fake dating and I loved Cindy Steel’s Christmas novella, A Christmas Spark, which I read last year! Faking Christmas did not disappoint one bit. In fact, it’s a new favorite and a book I plan to read again and again.

1. First off, I really love closed-door romances during Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, I love open door romances as well, but there’s just something about Christmas that makes me want to focus more on the holiday season than on intimacy. But I still love love. That’s why this series appealed to me so much. Cindy Steel is so good at creating these sweet, romantic moments and I don’t even miss the sexy scenes at all!

2. I loved Olive and Miles. Both are teachers at the same school, and they’re not the biggest fans of each other. I really don’t enjoy enemies to lovers stories so I was a bit worried, but these two are friendly enemies. They don’t care for one another, but they’re still kind and respectful to each other. They tease each other and poke fun at minor things, but there’s no hate there. Phew! I really struggle with characters who fight and argue all the time, so I’m so glad that was not the case with this book. Both characters are endearing, sweet, silly, and great for one another. Miles is a dreamboat and Olive is the girl next door.

3. I really liked most of the supporting characters. Miles’s family is wonderful. I love his dad in particular, and his mom is super nice. I also liked Olive’s sister and think they have a really cute relationship. She also has adorable twin nieces and a cool brother-in-law. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Olive’s mom, but I came around in time. Olive’s ex is also around for a little while, and he’s a slime ball.

4. I loved all the Christmas! The lodge in Vermont sounds stunning, with cabins all blanketed in snow. The lodge hosts a Christmas bingo with fun festive tasks for guests to complete, plus they have fun activities like sledding and gingerbread house making. The cabins all have Christmas trees, music plays over the speakers, dinner is done family style in the main building. It just sounds so perfect! Miles talks Olive into doing a polar bear plunge with him, and that might be my favorite scene.

5. The romance is *chef’s kiss*. I LOVE fake dating, and these two do such a great job… at first. Miles is so enthusiastic about the fake dating scheme and really goes overboard with affection. I couldn’t stop beaming as I read. He pushes Olive outside of her comfort zone, but in doing so he shows her what she truly deserves. They have multiple deep conversations, evening cuddle sessions, and flirty moments. The banter is perfection. The kisses were swoony and definitely steamed up my glasses. I love reading a good kiss.

6. There’s a deeper underlying issues surrounding grief and the loss of a parent (that happened before the book begins), which I feel was handled so well and allowed Olive and Miles to form a deep and meaningful connection. I felt so many feels!

All in all, Faking Christmas is a Christmas book lover’s dream come true. I highly, highly recommend you give it a try! It’s guaranteed to warm your heart and put a smile on your face. I hope it ends up on audio someday so I can listen when I need a pick-me-up!

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood | Book Review

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new STEMinist rom-com in which a scientist is forced to work on a project with her nemesis--with explosive results.

Like an avenging, purple-haired Jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project--a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia--Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward.

Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. And sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school--archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away.

Now, her equipment is missing, the staff is ignoring her, and Bee finds her floundering career in somewhat of a pickle. Perhaps it's her occipital cortex playing tricks on her, but Bee could swear she can see Levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas...devouring her with those eyes. And the possibilities have all her neurons firing. But when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there's only one question that matters: What will Bee Königswasser do?

I LOVED The Love Hypothesis (read my review at the link above), so I was incredibly excited to see Love On the Brain pop up on Netgalley and then even more excited when I was quickly approved! I read this 7 months ago, so I literally had no chill about it. I dove in immediately and had so much fun reading this quirky, nerdy romance. As always, my main points are bolded.

1. The first this you should know is that this is not in any shape or form a sequel to The Love Hypothesis. We’ve got completely different characters, a different setting, different science, same quirk. There’s no mention of anyone or anything from The Love Hypothesis so, while this is being marketed as part of the same series, it’s a standalone novel. Science and the author are the only two things that tie these books together.

1. Bee. When I think of Bee, I think of this little slice of puff pastry. She’s pretty adorable and quirky (I think I’m going to use this word to describe a lot about this book). Bee is a neuroscientist, who is on loan to NASA from NIH to collaborate on a project involving developing helmets for astronauts that offer transcranial magnetic stimulation. It sounds like it’s essentially a non-invasive way of stimulating the brain to help control mood? Who knows. The science was way over my head and, at times, made me glaze over and read the words but not actually know what I was reading. Anyway, Bee is very smart and sweet and spirited. she’s frequently underestimated and pushed to the side. She’s relatively fresh off a bad break-up (her ex cheated on her with her best friend), so there’s a lot of insecurity and issues with trust on her end. I felt for her and liked her a lot. Oh, she’s also obsessed with Marie Curie and I now know more about Marie than I ever needed to know. lol.

2. Levi is a major cinnamon roll. He’s the silent brooding type, who doesn’t always know how to process his feelings and act on them correctly and is just so sweet. I wanted to hug him and also give him a pep talk. I love how he treats Bee (he takes her seriously and really respects her), how he feels about her, and how he sticks up for what’s right and fair. Oh my gosh, there’s a scene where he has to go save her from a cemetery that she got locked into because she fell asleep after her run, and I was cracking up. And he loves cats. My goodness.

3. These two… oh my goodness. They are hilarious and frustrating at the same time. Their banter and flirtatious teasing of one another had me smiling a lot. Levi has been in love with Bee for years but has accidentally disguised that love as hate. She is convinced that he hates her, therefore she also hates him and he struggles to convince her otherwise! She jokes with him about it and brings it up all the time, and just when you think they’re turning a corner and she’s beginning to understand how he really feels, she says he hates her again and ahhhhhhhh!! LOL. Seriously, I relate to this part of Bee more than I’d like to admit.

4. There is some major heat in this book. Wow. And the swoons are there, too, OF COURSE. These two have some very sweet, romantic moments.

5. Bee’s co-worker… I cannot remember her name for the life of me. Oh my gosh, she is a dramatic hoot and really grew on me. I was rolling my eyes all over the place at first, but then I loved her. She also has an online friend named Schmac, and I loved her candid conversations with him about her life.

6. I’m not kidding when I say I glazed over the science bits and a lot of the info about Marie Curie’s life. Science and facts are abundant in this book, way more than I remember in The Love Hypothesis, and there were times when I feared I would not survive it.

7. Bee’s monologues include a lot of trademark symbols behind made-up phrases, which was annoying. I searched my eARC by “™” and got 42 results. It was excessive. We have WurstFest™ (aka Meatwave, aka a “dicksplosion in the testosteroven”); Cockcluster™ (meetings with only one woman in the room); Sausage Referencing™ (when a man vouches for a woman’s ideas, therefore making the rest of the men think it’s a better idea); The Cute Guy™, The Handsome Guy™, and The Sexy Guy™ (all of these “guys” are categories that Bee and her friend place guys in, and each category has different qualities); Hostile Companionable Silence™ (how Bee and Levi work), Levi Green™ (as opposed to an actual color), and Uh-Oh™. This was easily my least favorite part of the book. Every time I saw a ™ I wanted to throw my Kindle. I don’t like the use of trademark as a way to place emphasis on something or make it seem special. I see it on social media a lot, and it bugs me because that’s not how trademarks work! It’s like when people speak in hashtags (for example: “Hashtag best. summer. ever!”). Annoying. There’s a time and a place for hashtags, and there’s a time and a place for trademark symbols. This was not the time or the place for trademark symbols. Wow. That was a rant. Moving on.

8. There’s some major “You’ve Got Mail” vibes that I loved.

9. There’s also some drama and career scaries, a mysterious cat, and even a life or death situation and it all combined together to create quite the page-turner!

All in all, I really enjoyed Love On the Brain. The Love Hypothesis is still my favorite of the two stories, but Love On the Brain is filled with quirk, heart, nerdiness, and a heaping spoonful of swoons. If you like science, women in STEM, plucky heroines, and cinnamon roll heroes then I highly recommend this book.
