Top Ten Things Getting in the Way of my Reading Time

Posted May 15, 2023 by Jana in About Me, Top Ten Tuesday / 17 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is “Things Getting in the Way of Reading” and was lovingly stolen from A Cocoon of Books during freebie week because I loved the idea so much. I’m never not in the mood to talk about books, but sometimes it’s fun to talk about other things too! So this week I’m sharing ten other things that I take up my time (some of which I enjoy more than others)!

1. Crochet
Last year I taught myself to crochet and started up my own business this year! I make small stuffed toys and sell them, either as ready-to-ship or commissioned pieces. I can make anything in any color(s) of the rainbow! I just set up an Instagram page for my business (@JanasCozyCritters) if you’re interested in taking a look!

2. Video Games
I have a Nintendo Switch and love all my cozy games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Story of Seasons, Dreamlight Valley, Potion Permit, Little Dragons Cafe, Grow: Song of the Evertree, and Mariokart. Let me know if you’re interested in being Switch friends! I could always use people to race with on Mariokart and I love visiting Animal Crossing islands.

3. Cross Stitching
I love working on cross stitch projects!

4. Learning
I love researching things I’m interested in including natural healing, religion, history, art, cryptozoology, and urban myths and legends.

5. Cleaning/Organizing/Redecorating
I love going through stuff to get rid of, re-organizing my stuff, making spreadsheet inventories of my yarn and embroidery floss, and switching up my decor.

6. Shopping
For me, I enjoy shopping even when I’m not spending money. I love building wish lists on Amazon and Etsy. I have fun hunting for books, crochet patterns, decorations, and other fun things I’d like to own someday. I also love running to the craft store for yarn.

7. Chatting
I love sitting around talking or spending time with friends and my mom and sister. Sometimes this is over lunch or just parked in the living room.

8. Baking
I do this more in the fall and winter months than any other time, but I love making yummy treats!

9. Watching Movies & TV
I love binging shows and watching movies.

10. Meditation & Exercise
I don’t love either of these, but they’re good for me. lol.

What takes you away from reading?
What are some of your hobbies? Do we share any?

Top Ten Books I Have Recommended to Others the Most

Posted May 8, 2023 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 29 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is “Books I Recommend to Others the Most” and feels slightly redundant, because the books I recommend to others the most seem to also appear in my TTTs the most! I’m going to dig a little deeper into my life of reading and share titles I have recommended a lot during various parts of my life and not just the ones I recommend the most at present. So here we go!

1. Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard
This is the book that made me fall in love with travel romance and also inspired me to dream big and go on a huge European excursion!

2. Catherine and the Pirate by Karen Hawkins
This book was my first historical romance, my first YA book, and my first pirate romance! To this day, I still love historical romance and gobble up all the pirate romances I can find. While I don’t read YA anymore, this was my gateway into YA fiction, which was severely lacking in options and variety when I was 15 years old.

3. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
I owe a lot to this book, and have such fond memories of my time reading this series. Twilight came out in 2005, the year I graduated high school. It took a while for it to appear on my radar since I was not a reader at this time (I read occasionally, but would never have claimed to be a reader). I believe around the time New Moon came out, someone in my college color theory class brought Twilight for a class assignment. We were discussing color symbolism in media. I was intrigued by the idea of a vampire romance and my mom had also heard little murmurings of this book, so we each got a copy and did a buddy read of it. We were hooked. We immediately went and bought New Moon upon finishing, and went to the Eclipse midnight release party and Borders bookstore. These books made me love reading again, and the YA fiction industry exploded. I found The Hunger Games, Shiver, and so many other books that I loved. Shortly thereafter, my friends and I started The Broke & the Bookish, and it all started for me with Twilight.

4. Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett
Oh, how I loved this book! I think I need to re-read it.

5. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
This is one of those books that solidified my love of fantasy romance, and I am forever looking for more books like it.

6. The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler
I bet you’re wondering when I’ll shut up about this book series. Well, never.

7. Christmas at Frozen Falls by Kiley Dunbar
This is my very favorite Christmas romance of all time.

8. The Gem Thief by Sian Ann Bessey
SO GOOD. There’s mystery, travel, suspense, romance, and everything I love in a book.

9. The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
This is the book that made me fall in love with the fauxmance trope.

10. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn
This is THE book I am telling everyone to read right now and is the reason I’ve read, like, 10 historical fiction novels this year. I didn’t even like historical fiction before this! Now it’s one of my favorite genres.

What books do you find yourself recommending over and over again?
Based on my picks this week, do you have any book recommendations for me?

The First 10 Books I Randomly Grabbed from My Shelf

Posted May 1, 2023 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 16 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is a bit of a game. Stand in front of your book collection, close your eyes, point to a title, and write it down. If you have shelves, point to your physical books. If you have a digital library, use a random number generator and write down the title of the book that corresponds with the number you generated. You get bonus points if you tell us whether or not you’ve read the book, and what you thought of it if you did! I have limited bookshelf space, so everything on it is either a book I loved and want to keep forever or one I hope to love. I’ve closed my eyes and selected my books, and am dividing them up between those two categories.

Books I Loved

Sleigh Bells In the Snow by Sarah Morgan
The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn
Cress by Marissa Meyer
Well Traveled by Jen DeLuca

Books I Hope to Love

Juliet by Anne Fortier
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig
The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry
The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley
Nala’s World by Dean Nicholson
Some Like It Scandalous by Maya Rodale

Have you read any of the ones I haven’t? Do they deserve to stay in my collection?
Do we share any favorites?

Top Ten Favorite Audiobook Narrators

Posted April 24, 2023 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 16 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is about audiobook narrators! If you’re not a fan of audiobooks, take this opportunity to share celebrities whose voices might change your mind if they were to start narrating audiobooks! This is a bit of a narrower topic than usual, so if audiobooks really aren’t something you’re interested in then choose a topic that works for you, or go back and pick a past topic you might have missed if you’d rather!

I have fallen in love with audiobooks. Since I started crocheting, I love them even more because I can read and work on a project at the same time! And I love, love a good narrator. If I love a book but not the narrator, I can’t listen. So I’m super excited to see which narrators you love because maybe I’ll find more to add to my list! I thought I’d share the names of narrators I love, along with a book or two I’ve listened to and consider to be a favorite.

1. Saskia Maarleveld (The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code by Kate Quinn and What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon)

2. Mary Jane Wells (The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas)

3. Teddy Hamilton (The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams, Not So Nice Guy by R.S. Grey,

4. Andi Arndt (Take Me Back by Meghan March and Heidi’s Guide to Four Letter Words by Tara Sivec & Andi Arndt)

5. Richard Armitage (Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeny and Wanderlust by Lauren Blakely)

6. Nicola Barber (Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco

7. Elizabeth Knowelden (The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss)

8. Luci Christian (Date Me Like You Mean It by R.S. Grey and Call Me Maybe by Cara Bastone)

9. Imogen Church (The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware)

10. Fiona Hardingham (The Lady Helen Trilogy by Alison Goodman and The Scorpio Race by Maggie Stiefvater — I love Steve West in this, too)

Tell me how you feel about audiobooks! Do you like them? No?
Who are some of your favorite narrators?
Is there a celebrity you’d love to see become an audiobook narrator?

Top Ten Most Amazing Places I’ve Visited

Posted April 17, 2023 by Jana in About Me, Top Ten Tuesday / 33 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is a non-bookish freebie, which means you can share your list on anything your heart desires! This top ten list could be on your favorite TV shows/movies, bands/singers, food items/recipes, items, places you’ve visited, fashion designers, etc. It could also be on a more broad topic like things nobody knows about you, your favorite things in general, your hobbies, your views on life, etc. The possibilities are limitless, you just can’t talk about books! I cannot wait to see what everyone has chosen to write about and get to know all of you a little better! I love traveling, so I’ve chosen to list out my favorite places I’ve visited. And every single one of them was with my favorite travel partner: my mom (and today is her birthday, so how perfect is this??). I’m not just limiting it to cities or countries, I’m letting myself get even more specific. These are in no particular order, as I love them all!

1. Venice, Italy
I loved walking through the tight alleyways along the canals. Everything is so twisty and turny, and every turn you make presents you with a stunning new view of a bridge or a secluded alcove. It’s easy to get lost, but it’s also easy to end up in places where you’re totally alone. That quiet, magical time of realizing nobody else is around is amazing. It’s just you and the water. And the pigeons. lol.

2. Bellagio, Italy
My mom and I stayed at a pink hotel right on Lake Como, and our corner room provided us with two balconies to gaze out at the stunning views. We climbed to the very top of the town and saw the most beautiful little chapel, and then we dined on some amazing past on our way back down. My favorite gelato shop has a bench right on the water, and it was empty for us every time we stopped to get a cup.

3. Florence, Italy
Florence has my heart. I loved seeing the Duomo, which is right smack dab in the middle of everything. Seeing Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze was a transcendent experience, My mom and I found the cutest jewelry shop and bought some fun souvenirs, and I had the best prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich of my life here.

4. Curaçao
This little Caribbean island is magical. The traditional architecture is stunning, and all the buildings are pastel colored. My mom and I had so much fun ducking in and out of the shops and basking in the sea breeze (it gets so windy there).

5. La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain
I minored in art history in undergrad, so I am obsessed with art and architecture. Visiting Gaudi’s stunningly unique church after studying it and seeing it in my textbooks and on lecture slides was surreal. When the sun shines through those stained glass windows the entire interior becomes a kaleidoscope of color. And then when you stand in the glow of those windows? You can almost feel the colors soaking into your skin. I could have stayed here for hours.

6. Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Mallorca is a small Spanish island, famous for their pearls. My mom, sister, and I visited the most famous Mallorcan pearl store, Majorica, which has been producing these pearls since the process began in 1890. We each bought some, and I have cherished them ever since. I also visited my very first European cathedral here in Mallorca, The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma (La Seu). I saw my very first rose window in this church!

7. Paris, France
I was going to say the Eiffel Tower, but then I got sad because I loved Paris so much. I loved the iconic Art Nouveau metro station entrances, the hot pink bakery outside our quaint hotel that sold the most amazing quiche and strawberry tarts, the Notre Dame, Shakespeare and Company, the Louvre, exiting the Louvre and getting my first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower, the baguette sandwiches, Sainte-Chapelle, the Sacré-Cœur, everything. My mom and I ate nutella crepes sitting on a bench overlooking the Eiffel Tower. It doesn’t get more magical than that. Visiting Paris was a dream come true.

8. The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy
I got the picture everyone gets of themselves, holding the tower up. But I don’t care. I have wanted to see that tower since I was little, and it was so much fun.

9. New York City at Christmas
This was another dream come true! My mom and I stayed in this adorable boutique hotel with a door man and a bellhop and a Christmas tree in the lobby and breakfast with fresh doughnuts from a local bakery. We saw the Rockefeller tree, bought obscenely expensive truffles from Teuscher Chocolates, watched the Rockettes dance in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, saw Mary Poppins on Broadway, saw all the beautiful Christmas storefront windows, braved the coldest and windiest night of our lives at the top of the Empire State Building (there were like 2 other people up there with us), bought an ornament from Bloomingdale’s, had frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity 3, found the best pizza ever, saw Starry Night at the Museum of Modern Art, went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, took the wrong subway, walked the streets at night looking at Christmas lights and eating candied peanuts, got overwhelmed in Times Square, poked into FAO Schwarz (I was last there as a kid and my parents bought me a cute dog stuffed animal), at ate Junior’s in Grand Central Station, and so much more. We had the best time, and made the best memories.

10. Juneau, Alaska
This was a port of call on our Alaskan cruise, but Juneau will forever have a place in my heart because this is where I got to go whale watching. It was a cold, misty day out there on the boat but I seriously felt like I had communed with nature. There’s something so majestic about watching whales dance in the water. I saw so many flukes, tails, spouts, and even breaches! I never knew how much I loved whales until this experience, and I still can’t get enough of them. I look for spouts every time I’m near the ocean now, and I see them way more than I would ever expected.
