Hotshot pilot Leo Eddowes is afraid of nothing and no one. So when she's asked to evacuate a man from the wilds of Alaska, she doesn't hesitate. But with enemies in close pursuit and the weather turning sour, what should have been a simple mission quickly shifts to disaster.

And there's only one way out.

When Elias Thorne disappeared, he was America's most wanted. Now he's spent more than a decade in one of the most remote places on earth, guarding a dangerous secret. Leo's arrival, quickly followed by a team of expert hunters, leaves him no choice but to join forces with her—and run. Neither is prepared for their reluctant partnership to flare into something as wild and untamed as the frozen world around them...but as desperately cold days melt into scorchingly hot nights, Leo and Elias must learn to dig deep, trust in each other, and forge a bond as strong as the forces of nature.

Stranded together in a frozen wilderness,
There's nowhere left to run...

I love romantic suspense, and I’m always on the hunt for another amazing one that’s not paranormal or erotica. Do you know how hard those are to come by? I absolutely adored the first book in this series, Whiteout, which ended on a cliffhanger. I was eager to get my hands on Uncharted for a resolution to that story… and there wasn’t. lol. There’s some info and some… movement? I’m not sure movement is the right word. It hasn’t been that long since I read Whiteout, but I struggled to remember some things and people that maybe would have helped me piece this story together a little better. Definitely don’t read this one without having read Whiteout first. You’ll be even more confused than I was, because something important happens in that story that they refer to in this one.

Anyway, moving on! I loved the setting. The Alaskan wilderness is always an amazing setting, but it’s particularly exciting in romantic suspense because it’s so treacherous and dangerous. I also loved the dog, Bo! I panic when dogs or cats (or any beloved pet, really) appears in a suspense novel because many, many authors decide that killing or torturing that pet would be a good idea for a plot point. I blacklist those authors. Animal abuse and deaths are a huge trigger for me. As soon as I got attached to Bo and began to fear for her safety, I wrote to Adriana Anders and begged her to tell me if I needed to stop reading this book. She wrote back within an hour and assured me that it was safe to continue. That email meant so, so much to me, and yes. She was right! I’m sorry if this is a spoiler for anyone reading this book, but I think it’s one worth mentioning. And that’s all I’ll say!

I LOVED Bo. She was so, so sweet and my favorite character in this book. She was the very best good girl in so many ways. Leo bugged me a bit with her stubbornness, but I grew to like her more as the book went on. Elias is a gruff and surly teddy bear, and I really liked him. There was less tension and suspense in this book, compared to Whiteout, which was a bit disappointing. The romance was sweet and well-balanced between two people who want to be tough alphas but are willing to be betas sometimes.

My biggest issue with this book was the dialogue, which I can only hope will be changed before publication. All the characters seem to hate speaking in complete or normal-sounding sentences. Here are some spoiler-free examples:

“Today we do the summit. Hopefully before the helicopter arrives.” He pointed straight up. “Hope not to break our necks in the process.”

That “hope not to…” sentence is weird. Like maybe “Let’s hope we don’t break our necks in the process.” just sounds better.

The ringing in her ears continued. Not a good sign.
“You walk?”
No. “Yes.”

What about “Can you walk?” It just feels better.

“You’re burning up.”
She huffed out a weird sound that felt like a laugh. “I mention I had a stomach thing? Food poisoning. I thought. Maybe it was a bug?”
“He paused, eyes wide. “Kidding me?”

Maybe… “Did I mention…” and “Are you kidding me?”

Then there’s a bunch of little sentences all throughout the story like these:

“Leo your real name?”
“Way you’re looking at me. I’ve gotten a lot of that.”
“Know you’re awake.”
“Time is it?”

I could excuse it if they came from one person. Maybe it’s a weird character quirk or something, but these kinds of sentences came from both Elias and Leo, as well as a secondary character or two. I could also excuse it if it happened only once in a while. It’s very common for people to speak like this on occasion. Like, “you ok?” is commonly used without the “are” at the beginning and nobody cares. But people do not talk like this allllll the time, almost every time they say something.

So often when Leo and Elias talk to each other, it’s back and forth with one- to three-word sentences. The dialogue is very short and choppy (this is not a quote, but explains my thoughts because this is how it felt: “You ok?” “Yes. You?” “Yes.” “Good.” “Let’s keep going.” “Ok.”). As evidenced in the examples above, there are frequently missing words, but there are also the bare minimum of words. Elias even sometimes only talks in grunts or other inaudible noises. The quality of the dialogue was so frustrating to me that I nearly DNFed multiple times, but I really really wanted to know what happened so that I can continue with this series (if there are more books coming. I haven’t seen an announcement yet.). I also really like the author and was so touched by her caring attitude towards me that I wanted to love every single thing about this book! She’s so nice, she deserves to have her book loved! And I almost, almost loved it. But the dialogue made me want to scream. It did improve a little in the last third or so of the book, which made it even more obvious to me that this kind of dialogue was not a character quirk. The dialogue wasn’t like this in Whiteout, so I don’t think this is just how the author writes. I keep trying to figure out why these choices were made for this book, and I can’t come up with an explanation.

Anyway, I’ve rambled on way too long about the dialogue. I’ve been purposely vague in most of my review because it’s easy to spoil thrillers. Overall, I’m hoping there’s more books in this series. As I mentioned before, I loved the first one. This one wasn’t as great for me (even though I did really enjoy parts of it), but I’m eager to read another one that wows me again!

Top Ten Books I Loved that Sent Me Searching for More

Posted June 7, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 14 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! Have you ever you read a book and immediately wanted more just like it, perhaps in the same genre, about the same topic or theme, by the same author, etc? I once read a medical romance and then went to find more because it was so good. I’ve discovered new authors I loved and then devoured everything else they’d ever written. I’ve read books set in a location I wanted to read more books set in. I love it when books make me want to read more books, and I think this phenomenon should be celebrated when it happens! So here we go!

The Gem Thief by Sian Ann Bessey
This book made me want more books with heists and also books with luxury travel.

Hotshot Doc by R.S. Grey
Hotshot Doc made me want more workplace romances that take place in hospitals or doctors offices!

Catherine and the Pirate by Karen Hawkins
This was my first pirate romance, and I fell in love with pirates and romances set on pirate ships because of it.

Till Death by Jennifer Armentrout
This is an amazing romantic suspense, and after I finished it I immediately wanted more romantic suspense titles.

I Temporarily Do by Ellie Cahill
The fauxmance! This is one of the first fake dating books I read, and we all know I’ve read as many as possible ever since.

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
This made me want to read all of Riley’s other books AND find more books set in creepy buildings.

The Caged Graves by Dianne K. Salerni
This made me want more spooky, southern Gothic novels.

Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare
This was my first Tessa Dare book, and started me in on ALLLL her others! I’ve almost read her entire catalog now!

Starry Night by Debbie Macomber
This book made me want more books set in Alaska.

On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves
This book made me fall in love with survival stories!

What books have you read and then gone off to find more like them?
Can you recommend any other books I might like based on my picks above?

It all started with the wrong Help Wanted ad. Of course it did.

I’m a professional fluffer. It’s NOT what you think. I stage homes for a living. Real estate agents love me, and my work stands on its own merits.

Sigh. Get your mind out of the gutter. Go ahead. Laugh. I’ll wait.

See? That’s the problem. My career has used the term “fluffer” for decades. I didn’t even know there was a more… lascivious definition of the term.

Until it was too late.

The ad for a “professional fluffer” on Craigslist seemed like divine intervention. My last unemployment check was in the bank. I was desperate. Rent was due. The ad said cash paid at the end of the day. The perfect job!

Staging homes means showing your best angle. The same principle applies in making a certain kind of movie. Turns out a “fluffer” doesn’t arrange decorative pillows on a couch.

They arrange other soft, round-ish objects.

The job isn’t hard. Er, I mean, it is — it’s about being hard. Or, well… helping other people to be hard.

Oh, man…

And that’s the other problem. A man. No, not one of the stars on the movie set. Will Lotham – my high school crush. The owner of the house where we’re filming. Illegally. In a vacation rental.

By the time the cops show up, what I thought was just a great house staging gig turned into a nightmare involving pictures of me with an undressed star, Will rescuing me from an arrest, and a humiliating lesson in my own naivete.

My job turned out to be so much harder than I expected. But you know what’s easier than I ever imagined?

Having all my dreams come true.

Ok, so… the synopsis of Fluffy really didn’t sound like it was going to be my kind of book. LOL. I mean, like the heroine, I had no idea what a fluffer was until one of my friends told me. I was worried Fluffy would be too much blushing for me, but this same friend told me that it really has nothing to do with fluffers and what fluffers do. The synopsis sounded funny otherwise (what a hilarious mistake to make!) and I’d seen some really great reviews, so I downloaded the free prequel novella (Little Miss Perfect), and thought I’d give this series a try! I was so sucked in by that novella that I read it in one sitting and immediately grabbed Fluffy to continue the story. I’m so glad I did, because this book was really, really fun!

Fluffy is hilarious. The texts between her and the guy who was hiring a fluffer on craigslist had me actually laughing, because I could see this happening to myself. Mallory is very smart and well put together, but she’s lacking in the street smarts. She shows up to the job, expecting to stage a home for some kind of film production and… walks into something that has her a bit mortified. Yes. It’s THAT kind of film. Her internal monologues were just so perfect! Mal’s childhood crush, Will, has been renting his family home out for various events and had no idea what was happening at his house until he showed up and found Mal. He shuts everything down and the police are called, and he saves Mal from even more embarrassment by vouching for her and confirming that there was no possible way she was lying about not knowing what she’d agreed to. It’s one of the most awkward and hilarious scenes I’ve ever read in romance, and set the stage for a very fun story. Mallory is still in desperate need of money, so she and Will enter into an agreement where, if she can sell his home, he will pay her a commission on the selling price. Flirting and feelings happen, and I just love these two together. Will is so dreamy and Mallory is just so sweet. They’re adorable together. Mallory’s two friends are also great, and they each get their own book in this series! I can’t wait to read it. I’m so excited I’ve discovered Julia Kent! I love her writing style and humor. Highly recommended!

Top Ten Popular Books/Series I Feel Like Everyone Has Read… But Me

Posted June 1, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 17 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! I think my scheduling issues with my posts have been worked out, but I’m not positive yet! I’ve done so, so much testing. If you stopped by at midnight (EDT) or later on 1/6/21 and TTT wasn’t visible to you yet, please comment (once you can see it, obviously) and let me know which device and browser you’re using, and what part of the world you’re in. I will get to the bottom of this eventually, mark my word!

This week’s topic is a freebie, which is so much fun but also hard for me since I come up with all the topics and then when a freebie rolls around it’s… just another topic I have to come up with! LOL. But it’s fun for me to see what everyone else comes up with because sometimes I steal those topics for future weeks! If I do that I will, of course, credit you and your creativity. Coming up with new topics can be hard for me after so many years!

I chose to feature super popular books or book series that I feel like everyone in the world has read but me! Here we go!

Books

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
And that’s not for lack of trying! I have tried and failed to finish this book at least 5 times now. But I love every film adaptation I’ve seen.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
And I NEVER will. I’ve seen the movie, and this story is brutal on the feels.

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
I could potentially be talked into this one. Maybe not.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
I’m very sorry, but I will not.

Series

(Apparently a series can only be extremely popular if the author has multiple initials in their name.)

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Well, I’ve read the first one because it was required for my children’s lit program in grad school and ended up DNFing the second one because it’s just not my cup of tea. I used to feel like I was majorly missing out, and now I can’t find it in me to care anymore. lol. If I’m missing out, oh well! I just don’t care!

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein
But I have seen the movies!

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
I’ve also read the first one and thought it was lovely, so I just need to make the rest of them a priority.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
I was intrigued for a while and even own the first book, but I’ve since been told (by many trusted friends and family members) that this series might be too much for me. LOL

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I was anti-books as a kid, and now I feel like I’ve passed the point in my life where I would even feel the magic everyone talks about. I just don’t think I’d see the appeal having not read them as a child.

Let’s discuss!
Do I need to read anything listed here?
Should I just continue on not having read some of these?
Are any particularly overrated?

2021 Christmas In July Gift Exchange Information & Sign-Ups

Posted May 31, 2021 by Jana in Blog Event / 2 Comments

Hi everyone! Santa is on the beach sipping fruit punch and working on his tan, so he has enlisted his helpers once again to help spread a little Christmas cheer this summer! And it’s going to work a liiiitle differently than last year, so please read carefully! If you send in your sign-up email from last year without editing it first, I’ll have to delete it and ask you to re-do it.

Below you will find all event info, including the rules for the exchange, sign up directions, and a questionnaire so the person shopping for you can get to know you better.

The Details:

  • Sign-ups are open until 11:59 PM EDT on June 17th and I will be sending matches out on June 18th.
  • Due to the nature of this gift exchange, this event is open to residents of the USA ONLY. #TBTBSanta will be back to sign up for this October, and will be open internationally like always.
  • You must be 18 years old or older to participate.
  • It is strongly recommended that you have a Twitter account in order to fully participate in this event. Last year most of the people who participated were on Twitter and used the event hashtag to make friends, ask questions, post clues about their identities, share pictures of what they received, ooo and ahh over gifts others received, and thank their Santas. Those who did not have Twitter ended up feeling left out, and their Santas missed out on that interaction and excitement from their recipient. Whenever possible, I will be pairing Twitter people up with other Twitter people to hopefully avoid this. It all depends on the numbers and who signs up for which gift options and monetary tiers, though, so I cannot guarantee that this will work out for everyone.
  • Please only sign up if you are committed to sending off your gift(s) on time.
  • What you sign up to send is what you will receive. I will be grouping people up based on gift option and monetary tier so that everything is fair.
  • Shipping does not count towards the monetary value of the gift.
  • Please note that this is not a swap. The person who will be sending to you is not the same person you will be sending to.
  • The event hashtag is #GiftmasInJuly. Please use it lots because the friendships that form around events like these are the best!
  • If you and I don’t know each other, please reach out to me and introduce yourself. I like to know the people who are participating!

If you have any questions or concerns before or during this process, please reach out! You can simply write to ChristmasInJulyExchange@gmail.com and I’ll get back you as soon as possible.

Gift Options and Monetary Tiers:

The digital-only option from last year has been retired due to lack of interest, but you can still note in your sign-up questionnaire for the “shower” option that you would prefer to receive all digital gifts.

Shower: A showering of gifts randomly throughout the month! This option includes both digital items (ebooks, audiobooks, PDF craft patterns, gift cards, etc.) and physical items shipped directly from retailers. Please ensure you reveal yourself in some way (in a card/note that you send in the mail, email, gift note, etc.) when you’re finished sending gifts so your recipient knows they have gotten everything.

  • Shower 1: $10-$15 (excluding any shipping costs) This option has been removed due to lack of sign-ups.
  • Shower 2: $20-$25 (excluding any shipping costs)
  • Shower 3: $30+ (excluding any shipping costs)

Downpour: A downpour of gifts arriving all at once! This gift is a traditional, curated box (like TBTBSanta). You put together a physical box of goodies (along with a note to reveal yourself), preferably wrapped, and send it directly to your recipient.

  • Downpour 1: $10-$15 (excluding any shipping costs) This option has been removed due to lack of sign-ups.
  • Downpour 2: $20-$25 (excluding any shipping costs)
  • Downpour 3: $30+ (excluding any shipping costs)

Both gift options are wonderful and have their own perks, so choose whichever one works best for you!

Signing Up:

Please send the following completed questionnaire to ChristmasInJulyExchange@gmail.com. The more detailed you are, the easier it will be for your Summer Santa to spoil you! (Please do not attach a Word (or other) document to the email. Instead, please paste your answers directly into the body of your sign-up email.)

1. Gift Option and Monetary Tier Selection:

Shower 1 has been removed as an option due to lack of interest.
b. Shower 2: $20-$25 (excluding any shipping costs)
c. Shower 3: $30+ (excluding any shipping costs)
d. Downpour 1: $10-$15 (excluding any shipping costs)
e. Downpour 2: $20-$25 (excluding any shipping costs)
f. Downpour 3: $30+ (excluding any shipping costs)

2. Do you live in the USA?
Yes
No

3. Are you 18 years old or older?

7. Where else can you be found online? (Blog, Insta, YouTube, TikTok, etc.):

8. Your wish list(s) (Please provide links to any wish lists you have. If you don’t have an online wishlist, please make one. It’s much easier than listing out what you’d like here. These wish lists must remain exclusive to the Christmas In July Gift Exchange until you’ve received your gifts.)

9. Discuss your digital preferences. (Do you have an e-reader? Which one? Would you enjoy getting an Audible credit? Do you want any online subscriptions or gift memberships? Where do you prefer getting MP3 albums from? If you would rather not receive digital gifts or would prefer to only receive digital gifts, please note that here.)

10. How do you practice self care?

11. What do you collect?

12. What are some of your favorite book genres/authors?

13. What won’t you read?

14. What fandoms do you belong to?

15. What are you always in need of?

16. What are your favorite things? (colors, patterns, fragrances, TV shows, movies, music, hobbies, foods/treats, etc.)

17. Do you have any allergies? What can’t you receive? (If you signed up for a curated box, this would be a great place to mention whether or not you would be ok receiving homemade food items.):

18. Share anything else your Summer Santa needs to know about you that was not covered by the questions above.

19. Please provide the contact information (twitter handle and/or email) of 1-2 buddies that your sender can contact with questions about you or information they need relayed to you. (This person does not need to know you well, they just need to be willing to be the go-between between you and the person sending to you. If you have nobody to ask, post to the event hashtag and ask for a volunteer.)

Things to Do:

  • Please ensure all gifts arrive to your recipient by July 31st. If you’re doing a curated box, it is recommended that you mail it by July 24th (this is flexible depending on what shipping method you use, so use your own judgement here.).
  • Once you’ve sent all of your gifts and revealed yourself (either through a gift note or a letter in the curated box you mailed), please fill out this form. If you’re planning to shower your recipient all month, you can totally wait to fill this out on July 31st. Include any info you think would be helpful for me if I need to jump in and help, should any problems arise. I don’t need an itemized list or a bunch of order information unless you want to send it to me. I’m not here to monitor or judge what you send. I’m here to make sure everything runs smoothly and be the go-between if we run into any issues. If you’re sending a curated box, a tracking number is all I need from you.
  • Once you receive ALL your Christmas in July gifts, please fill out this form!
  • If you have not received your gifts by August 2nd please email me and I will attempt to contact your Summer Santa. Please understand that I will try my very best to work it out, but there is only so much I can do if someone decided to be a punk.
  • Be sure to thank your Summer Santa in some way, whether through social media or email. People who do not thank their Santas will be asked to not participate in future Santa events that I host.
  • Please utilize the event hashtag #GiftmasInJuly to ask questions, post hints, share in your shopping/gifting/receiving/sending process! Show us what you got! This makes the event so much fun!

Please, please reach out to me if you need anything. I am more than happy to help you. If something comes up that causes you to be late, please email me and let me know. I don’t need to know the details if it’s personal, but communication is super important in an exchange like this. I will always be empathetic, understanding, and respectful of your privacy. If I have to chase you down to find out why your recipient did not receive what you agreed to send them, I will most likely ask you to not sign up again (for both Christmas In July and TBTBSanta). Please don’t make me do that, because it probably causes me more pain than it does you. Exceptions will always be made if something catastrophic occurs, so if that happens please just talk to me when you are able so I can ensure that you are ok and your recipient is taken care of.

Gift Giving Guidelines:

Please keep in mind that ARCs, promotional swag, and shipping DO NOT count towards the monetary value of the gift.

Due to everything going on in the world right now, please do not send homemade food items unless your recipient specifically notes in their survey that they would like them. Pre-packaged, store-bought foods are fine (and encouraged!).

Be thoughtful! Don’t just throw something together from the donation pile in your home. Send something you would be happy to receive if you were your recipient. You don’t have to stick to a person’s wish list, but please pay attention to their questionnaire answers and send them things you genuinely think they would like.

Have so much fun shopping and spreading some holiday magic during this crazy time in the world!
Any questions? Ask in a comment below so my answers to you can help others who might be wondering the same thing. :)
