Growing up the daughter of notorious treasure hunter and absentee father Duke Wilder left Lily without much patience for the profession… or much money in the bank. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke’s coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. It pays the bills but doesn’t leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness—and leave him there.

Leo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they’d barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Ready to leave the past behind him, Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily Wilder is all business, drawing a clear line in the sand: it’s never going to happen.

But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. There’s a chance to right the wrongs—of Duke’s past and their own—but only if Leo and Lily can confront their history and work together. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives and hearts on the adventure of a lifetime.

Any kind of outdoorsy, survival sort of story immediately piques my interest. I don’t know what it is about stories like these. I’m not the least bit outdoorsy. I don’t hike or camp or even go outside if I don’t have to. LOL. I’m much more a fan of being inside and out of the sun and the bugs. Maybe that’s the reason I like these stories! Who knows? But when I saw that a new Christina Lauren book was coming out that sounded a little different than we usually get from them, I was pretty excited! Treasure hunting, second chance romance, and a little suspense? I am in. I ended up loving it, and it’s one of my favorite CLo books now! I read this over a year ago and am just now finding time to review it, so I’m keeping things nice and simple with just a list of my thoughts this time.

1. This book starts off with a bang. Shortly after Leo’s bro trip with his buddies begins, something happens. What started out as a fun little fake treasure hunt turns into a full-blown race through treacherous terrain to find a real treasure. And danger could be lurking within every shadow.
2. I loved the local lore surrounding Lily’s father’s hidden treasure in the red rock canyons of Utah. It added a level of mystery and excitement I wasn’t expecting.
3. Lily and Leo end up breaking off from the other members of the group, so the bulk of the book is their adventure together. There’s more suspense, heavy discussions about their pasts both individually and the one they shared, survival aspects, and romance. I loved the blend of all of these things.
4. There’s a lot of action in this book, which was a fun change from what I’ve come to expect from CLo.
5. Leo and Lily are such a great couple. She’s strong and independent and seriously guarded. He’s sweet and caring. They made such a great team, deciphering clues and navigating this dangerous hunt together. There’s only one tent, guys… and only one sleeping bag. I will say no more. These two ooze chemistry.
6. I had so much fun. There’s banter and shenanigans and the danger was there, but written in a way that felt fun and exciting. It’s not something that will keep you up at night for any reason other than being hooked on the story and needing to know how it all ends.
7. In the interest of full disclosure, my initial attempt at reading Something Wilder was in audio format and I do not recommend it one bit. I live in Utah, where this book takes place. We do not speak with a twang here. I thought maybe this was the narrator’s choice, but then I read where Nicole’s (one of the secondary characters) twang is mentioned. We don’t have twangs. I later learned that Nicole is originally from Montana (I missed how old she was when she left), which some might argue makes this more accurate. But no, they don’t have twangs there either. People from Montana can sound a little Canadian, if anything, but not twangy except for maybe a very subtle one here and there in the more rural areas. The cowboy-wannabe twang the narrator chose for Nicole was so, so wrong for someone from either of these locations. Anyway. I returned the audiobook very early on and switched to my eARC, which was a very good choice for me.

All in all, I loved this! It was fun and fresh and different from the typical rom-com. I had so much fun on this adventure, and would love for Christina Lauren to write more out of the box rom-coms in the future!

Two strangers find themselves stranded at sea together in this epic new love story by bestselling author Beth O’Leary.

What if you were lost at sea…with your one-night stand?

Zeke and Lexi thought it would just be a night of fun. They had no intentions of seeing each other again. Zeke is only in town for the weekend to buy back his late father’s houseboat. Lexi has no time for dating when she needs to help take care of her best friend's daughter.

Going back home with a stranger seems like a perfect escape from their problems. But a miscommunication in the dark, foggy night means no one tied the houseboat to the dock. The next morning, Zeke and Lexi realize all they can see is miles and miles of water.

With just a few provisions on the idle boat, Zeke and Lexi must figure out how to get back home. But aside from their survival, they’re facing another challenge. Because when you’re stuck together for days on end, it gives you a lot of time to get to know someone—and to fall in love with them.

Ok look. This cover, combined with the fact that it’s a survival at sea romance had me salivating. This kind of story is my kryptonite, but goodness me this was soooooo messy. By the end of this review, you will be wondering why I didn’t DNF and my answer is simply that I couldn’t bring myself to look away because I had to know how it all worked out.

The entire book felt like a fever dream. You’ve got a one-night stand between Lexi and Zeke that occurs on a houseboat that drifts out to sea because communication? Who needs it? So they’re just bobbing out there in the North Sea on a boat that’s barely floating and can’t run that they both think is theirs. I was beginning to struggle at this point because I had a hard time believing this could realistically happen, but I hung in there. And then all the things start happening. If something could go wrong, it went wrong. And if something could conveniently happen to move the story along, it did. You’ve got an accidental gaping, festering wound and a concussion between these two people. This boat is covered in sweat and vomit due to the concussion… or maybe food poisoning… sea sickness? All of the above? Probably. They’re living off spoiled food that somehow Zeke is able to whip up into a hot meal even though there’s no running water or electricity on this boat and they’re rationing crackers with old sweaty cheese and cookies the rest of the time. They’re plugging holes with cotton t-shirts and tape and catching rain water in a tarp and bowls that sometimes slide right off the deck into the sea. There’s an outlandish oil rig situation and an injured seagull who they rescue from the water and feed their very meager rations to. Because if the seagull doesn’t survive this, we don’t want to either! And honestly, that would probably be me too so I can’t fault them for that, I guess!

There’s a lot of info dumping and repetition about their individual past struggles (some of which are disturbing… like Zeke’s first love who was well into adulthood while he was only 16 years old… ick). Both of them also have very intense family/found family situations and spend their time discussing them ad nauseam (either out loud or in their heads) when they’re not in the process of potentially succumbing to their individual injuries. And honestly, the dialogue had me cringing at times. Lexi is older than Zeke and will never let anyone forget it. She’s only 31, but you’d think this woman was 75 for how old she keeps telling Zeke she is. I got so tired of her making some self-deprecating comment about her age or her aged body (again, she is THIRTY ONE), just so he would come back and reassure her that age is just a number and she’s beautiful no matter what. He’s known her for less than two weeks and can’t stop thinking about what a beautiful puker she is. Meanwhile, his gaping wound is seeping pus from infection and they really just wish they were making out right now. I’m absolutely sure that no real humans would be lusting after and craving sex from one other under these dire circumstances. I struggled to believe the romance so much because they clearly only bonded over a shared traumatic experience. The chemistry between the two of them was lacking, and I had a hard time picturing them ever falling in love in the real world. They just don’t match, and my mind was never changed on that. These people needed medical attention and therapy, not romance. And then there’s a twist that made me throw the book across the room. Seriously?? What in the Days of Our Lives drama is this? Everyone in this book needs to take a very big step back and do some reassessing.

All in all, I was super intrigued when I read the synopsis. What a unique and interesting sounding story! But there was too much going on here. I enjoyed the parts of the story where survival instincts and ingenuity took over for a little while. It was interesting reading about what they did to try make life easier for themselves and find help, and if this had been just a survival story I think I would have liked it a lot more (especially if it were more believable). But there was a lot of drama layered on top of that surrounding them and their families as well as their individual pasts. I wish the romance aspect hadn’t been there at all and that this was a story about two strangers (or even friends) trying to make it out alive. The romance, family drama, and the comedy of errors throughout their journey to survival was too much for me and I had a hard time suspending the amount of disbelief necessary to fully immerse myself in this story.

Starling Ranch Inn promises to be a tropical paradise, and Sybil can’t wait to escape there, all expenses paid. Well technically the expenses were paid—last year, when she was supposed to go to Hawaii for her honeymoon with her then-fiancé Jamie. But the wedding didn’t go as planned (or at all), and now she’s decided to use those hotel vouchers alone, before they expire.

Sybil’s expecting mai tais, med spas and me-time, so she nearly plunges backwards into the infinity pool when she sees that Jamie has had the same idea! His family business is thinking of buying the resort, so he’s here with a gorgeous, tangerine bikini-clad “colleague” to give the property a once-over.

Desperate to save face in front of the ex who broke her heart at the altar, Sybil accidentally-on-purpose blurts out that she’s here with her boyfriend. But what starts as a harmless lie to spare her dignity soon spirals into an ex-fiancé fiasco when Sebastian—the second of Sybil’s three failed engagements—pops by fresh off a photography gig. Seb’s always up for a good time, and happy to play along ...sparking unexpected jealousy in Jamie.

From snorkeling snafus to stunning vistas to staff parties at the beach, Sybil does her best to juggle two ex-fiancés, but it’s becoming clear that her past of broken promises must be reckoned with once and for all—including that first fiancé, Liam, the one she never talks about…

Is the notorious free-spirit, life-of-the-party, runaway bride Sybil Rain ready to heal from her three past engagements and make room in her heart for a fourth and final chance at love?

Ok. I’d like to preface my review by saying I watched Hannah Brown on The Bachelor and then I watched her season of The Bachelorette. I like Hannah! She’s fun and will never pretend to be someone she’s not. Well, except for an author. I think this is the first celebrity book I’ve read before, and it taught me that I don’t like the idea of ghostwriters. I know that people sign up for this. They go into things knowing that they are writing a book for someone else and that that “someone else” will be taking all the credit. I didn’t know I hated the idea of this until I was reading the book and trying to picture Hannah having written it and not being able to. I’ve gotten to know well enough on TV and then on social media to know that this book does not sound like her. Why did she need to write a book so badly? Like, if she couldn’t or didn’t want to write it herself then why have someone else do it for her? I just don’t get why this is a thing and why people then flock to the celebrity and say things like, “oh you’re such a good writer I loved your book!!!” and they feel confident and happy enough to say “thank you!” when they didn’t write it. I could never! The imposter syndrome would be too severe for me. lol. BUT that’s just me. I would love it if you shared your thoughts on ghostwriters in the comments below.

This book has some undisclosed trigger warnings that blindsided me and could be upsetting to certain readers. I consider these warnings to be spoilers, but I absolutely wish I’d known about them before going in and these aren’t even my personal triggers. If you want to skip my warning, scroll past the pink arrows and italicized words below and pick up with “Review time!”, which has been bolded for your convenience.

There’s a lot of discussion about the main character’s previous miscarriage
that occurred before the book begins, as well as infertility due to her chronic health condition (PCOS).

These topics are broached without any warning and the discussions are
plentiful enough that they’re unavoidable. Please read with care.

Review time! Let me start out with what I liked, because I have some conflicting feelings that I’m struggling to organize. I did not realize that The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain is a companion novel to Mistakes We Never Made. I have not read MWNM and didn’t feel the least bit lost reading Sybil’s story, so go forth and be unafraid if you’re in the same boat I was in. I love a travel romance, and Sybil’s solo vacation really intrigued me. I wanted to escape to the beach, and I enjoyed the snorkeling and horseback riding and sunsets. The descriptions of the scenery were lovely, and I felt transported to Hawaii. I’ve been through a lot in my dating life, and the idea of making up a new boyfriend in order to save face in front of an ex-fiance is exactly the kind of idea I’d come up with but be too afraid to carry out. The fact that her fake boyfriend ended up being another real ex-fiance of hers was the cherry on top. This. Was. Messy! I’m willing to rip my hair out while I watch The Bachelor franchise shows, so obviously I enjoy drama. And the drama did its thing really, really well. I couldn’t look away and had to know how this all turned out.

But then… there were quite a few things I didn’t like. You can tell that this book was written for a celebrity influencer. There are a lot of brand names and discussions on content creating. Sybil is a content creator for a company that makes period panties and is not just in Hawaii to use her expiring travel vouchers, but to cover a blood moon for her company (because periods…). There’s a lot of talk of harnessing your feminine power from the moon and mentions of a holistic positivity coach when Sybil really should have just been in real therapy instead. Both Sybil and her most recent ex, Jamie (the one she’s lying to about her fake boyfriend), are extremely shallow and immature and go through no growth throughout the story. Sybil in particular is incredibly self-centered and feels she’s perfect and that everyone else she associates with is the problem. She takes no accountability for her choices and actions, and just when I thought she might grow up a bit she slid right back to where she was. I liked Seb, Sybil’s other ex and the one she’s pretending to date, but he’s a caricature of every free-spirited photographer I’ve ever seen in fiction and lacked the emotional depth he easily could have been given. I was excited about the promise of the fake dating trope, but quickly grew disappointed when it took a turn and ended up not being a true “fake dating” romance. This chaotic romance also leans very heavily into the miscommunication trope, which I never enjoy. The pacing felt very off. I got tired of the long passages about Sybil’s previous relationships that were oddly placed randomly throughout the story and threw me out of the present. I have a few more complaints about the actual romance that I consider to be spoilers, so I won’t share them… but yeah, I was disappointed with the ending and really wasn’t rooting for anyone by then.

All in all, this was a big disappointment for me. It started off strong, and I loved the summer vacation vibes and the promise of a fun fake dating romance, but was instead presented with a lackluster second chance romance between two characters who were way too immature to enter a relationship and some emotional content I wasn’t expecting that really dragged things down for me.

Anna Green thought she was marrying Liam “West” Weston for access to subsidized family housing while at UCLA. She also thought she’d signed divorce papers when the graduation caps were tossed, and they both went on their merry ways.

Three years later, Anna is a starving artist living paycheck to paycheck while West is a Stanford professor. He may be one of four heirs to the Weston Foods conglomerate, but he has little interest in working for the heartless corporation his family built from the ground up. He is interested, however, in his one-hundred-million-dollar inheritance. There’s just one catch.

Due to an antiquated clause in his grandfather’s will, Liam won’t see a penny until he’s been happily married for five years. Just when Liam thinks he’s in the home stretch, pressure mounts from his family to see this mysterious spouse, and he has no choice but to turn to the one person he’s afraid to introduce to his one-percenter parents — his unpolished, not-so-ex-wife.

But in the presence of his family, Liam’s fears quickly shift from whether the feisty, foul-mouthed, paint-splattered Anna can play the part to whether the toxic world of wealth will corrupt someone as pure of heart as his surprisingly grounded and loyal wife. Liam will have to ask himself if the price tag on his flimsy cover story is worth losing true love that sprouted from a lie.

I was so, so excited for this book. If you know me, you know that The Unhoneymooners is one of my favorite books ever and I was so excited for another fake dating CLo book set in a tropical location. The Paradise Problem seriously had all the makings of a favorite book for me, but I ended up being so disappointed in it. Here are a few of my very unorganized thoughts on this book so I can move on and away from this.

I hated how Anna was portrayed (like is she really this dumb and hopeless?). I am so tired of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and that’s what the authors tried so hard to have her be. The romance felt too rooted in lust, and this has way more steam in it than I’m used to in Christina Lauren’s more recent releases. There’s also way more language than I’m used to from them. I hated the main dude’s entire family. The family drama was seriously so over-the-top. What poor little rich people. I loved the setting. This could have been so good, but they took everything I loved from The Unhoneymooners and did a complete 180. Oh, and it is so jam packed with modern pop culture references that will not age well at all. This ended up being my biggest bookish disappointment of 2024.

Layla Dupree has given up on love.

She’s waded through all of the fish in the sea, each one more disappointing than the last. Apparently owning the bakery at Inglewild’s most romantic destination does not help one’s love life—despite her best efforts. All she wants is a partner who gives her butterflies, not someone who ghosts her at dinner and leaves her with the check.

Good thing Caleb Alvarez has the perfect solution.

After saving Layla from another date gone bad, he has a simple proposition: One month of no-strings dating. He’ll do his best to renew her faith in men while she rates his dating game. It’s a win-win situation. All the benefits of dating, without the added pressure of feelings and unmet expectations.

But there’s one ingredient they haven’t considered. The chemistry between them is red hot and the urge to take things to the next level is more tempting than Layla’s double fudge mocha brownies.

Will the heat between them boil over? Or will it be another case of mixed signals?

Mixed Signals is a sweet and steamy small-town romance. Our story features a bashful man who can rock a Hawaiian shirt, a hopeful and dreamy bakery owner, enough sweets to give you a cavity, and your favorite Inglewild residents. Mixed Signals is a standalone romance and the third book in the Lovelight series, a collection of interconnected novels.

I know I’ve sung Lovelight’s praises for years now, and this book will be no different. I love this small town and all the people who live in it. I love B.K. Borison’s writing. I love the romances she gives us, the special moments, the swoons. She’s an auto-buy author for me for sure. In this book we have Layla the baker and Caleb, the guy who no substitute teaches because he was fired by the police department for being too sweet. lol. So you’ve got pastries as a love language and a golden retriever who will capture the moon for his beloved. What more could anyone want?

Ok, so we’ve got Layla. She’s been very unlucky in her dating life, which I can absolutely relate to. I can confidently say that there are not many people out there who have dated as many frogs as I have. Anyway, I felt for Layla. She’s so sweet and she deserves someone who will treat her right and love her with his entire soul. And that’s Caleb! He’s been in love with her forever, and he shows her by going to her bakery every morning to order a croissant just so he has the opportunity to talk to her. Are you melting yet? Of course, she has no clue because she’s been burned so many times that he heart is guarded behind a very thick wall. He runs into her one day after her most recent horrible date, and they commiserate about their awful dating lives. Caleb comes up with an idea to date each other for one month as a mutually beneficial, no-strings-attached partnership of sorts. He will show her how she deserves to be treated, and she will critique his dating abilities and offer suggestions for improvements (if she has any–and how could she??).

Caleb’s and Layla’s chemistry is off the charts. Maybe it’s easier to date someone when you’re not supposed to be emotionally invested in them, but they sink into this very sweet friendship very quickly. I loved their dates and their conversations. I loved watching Caleb fall more and more for Layla, and I loved watching Layla slowly let him start tearing down her walls. They are the sweetest couple, and they both value what they have because it’s something they’ve wanted for so long. I swooned and smiled and my eyes turned into hearts for them.

AHHHH this series. I will never not tell someone to read it. I am annoying about it. I am clearly crummy at book recommendations because I’ll tell you to read these no matter what you preferred genre is. Oh, you like sci-fi? Read the Lovelight books. You’re a mystery fan? Read the Lovelight books. You don’t like romance? Wellllllllllll you’ll love the Lovelight books. I know this is book #3, but I accidentally reviewed these out of order so I am still mourning the fact that the series is over. I read these in order and I recommend that you do, too. I always love catching up with previous couples and B.K.’s writing just gets better and better!
