Top Ten Backlist Books I Own & Still Need to Read

Posted November 5, 2018 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 36 Comments

So… this topic is super broad and really hard. I know there’s no possible way to narrow down all the backlist books you’ve missed between now and the beginning of time to just 10, so just do your best! Maybe they’re the newest backlist books, or the ones by authors you love. Maybe they’re the ones you’ve had on your TBR list the longest or the ones that were published before you were born. Or MAYBE they’re just the highest on your list of priorities! Whatever the case may be, I’m expecting a whole lot of book pushing to come from this week’s topic!

Because I have a million books, I’ve decided to only mention the physical books on my bookshelves (that came out before 2018) that I got because I was so excited to read them and then promptly didn’t.

Legend by Marie Lu
Uprooted by Naomi Novik
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Geekerella by Ashley Poston
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund
The Love Academy by Belinda Jones
Spirited Away by Cindy Miles

Should I prioritize any of these?
Which backlist book is at the top of your TBR right now?

  1. Legend is one of my favorite series, and we are getting more books!!!! And, The Royal We is just perfection. I adored Geekerella. It’s on my favorites shelf, and we are getting another book in that world too. I hope you get to some of these.

  2. Yes, read The Night Circus!! One of my favorites and just a beautiful book! The Royal We is also a really fun read if you’re a royal watcher like me!

  3. The only ones I’ve read on this list is Ink and Bone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – both are so good!

I want to read most of the others on this list, especially Legend and For Darkness Shows the Stars!

    My TTT post!

  4. Ah, so I’m NOT the only one who has not finished the Harry Potter series! I held off on reading the series until my kids were old enough that I could read it aloud to them. We got hung up on Goblet of Fire (so dang long!). I still need to finish. We LOVED Chamber of Secrets. I haven’t read any of the others on your list, but I also have The Night Circus and Ink and Bone waiting to be listened to. I also have For Darkness Shows the Stars on my nightstand from the library, waiting to be started!

  5. On your list, I’ve read Legend, Night Circus, and all of the HP books. I for sure think you need to read HP and the Chamber of Secrets as well as Night Circus asap. The Night Circus should probably take priority (and I don’t say that lightly since I love, love, love HP) because it’s such a fantastical and magical story written for adults! It might have one of the most adult romances in any fantasy book that I’ve read (aside from anything Neil Gaiman writes).

  6. My favorite novel of all time is on your list! The Night Circus! It’s a brilliant book. If you like audiobooks, Jim Dale narrates it quite well. But I warn you, the book jumps around in time quite a bit, so you need to pay attention to the introductions for each chapter to figure out where in time they are.

Have you not read Harry Potter? Or are you just re-reading with the new printing? I love the new covers!

  7. Brandon Harbeke

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is well worth reading. It is one of the best books in that series.

  8. I love For Darkness Shows the Stars SO MUCH! It’s so underrated. I love its companion novel Across a Star-Swept Sea too! And I still need to read The Night Circus as well… I’ve had a hold with my library for the audiobook for what feels like forever…

  9. The Harry Potter, of course! That MUST be first! I have been wanting to read The Night Circus for soooo long and will finally have the opportunity/reason for my book club in 2019! YAY!! I have seen good reviews for The Royal We as well! Good luck!!
