When I get sick, I get REALLY sick. It’s never a “man, I feel a little under the weather” kind of sick. It’s always a, “Stop the world, I’m dying” kind of sick. So, I’m laying here extremely sick, taking meds ’round the clock, and diving into my second large box of tissues as I type this.
One thing I have learned during all my sick times is that when I am sick, I am completely unable to concentrate or pay attention to anything. I remember this one time I was sick, I watched the movie Somewhere in Time. My mom loves this movie. She says it’s so romantic and amazing. I kid you not, I watched it three times one day (when I was sick) and I have NO idea what it’s about. None. It confused the heck out of me. Two years ago I watched the first season of Modern Family while sick. I remembered none of it. I watched the season all over again a month or so later, and it was liking watching it for the first time.
My main point here is: I also can’t read while I’m sick. And it’s SOOOO frustrating. I know many of you who read, like, 5 books during your sick times. I could get SO much done! I can’t even write reviews when I’m sick! I tried yesterday, and I could not form a coherent sentence about the book. I’m laying here in bed, for hours of my life, with my bookshelf staring at me, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Instead, I’m watching Angel re-runs and coughing my guts out.
So, tell me. Is there anyone like me out there, or am I all alone in my delirious state of sickness? Can you read when you’re sick?

Awww, honey, I’m so sorry you’re sick!! *hugs*
It not always the same for me, the last time I was sick I raced through LOTS of books in between sneezing, but mostly I can’t focus on anything either and just watch no-brainer movies or even daytime television.
Hope you feel better soon!!
Thank you! *hugs* I’m so glad I’m not the only one who finds themselves watching no-brainer shows when I’m sick. Haha.
It depends on the book-I need something light and not too serious; I could not read a heavy book while sick. Sending positive vibes to you to feel better soon!
Thank you! And I agree, light is much easier than a serious one.
When I am sick I get very grumpy, needy and generally intolerant of anything other than lying down and having my husband rub my head. I usually get bad headaches and ear pain when I am sick too so that makes reading near impossible which is so frustrating because if I am at home in a bed on the couch doing nothing all day, I wish I could spend that time reading, but it is mostly useless.
It’s like you took the words out of my mouth! I get pretty grumpy as well, and my headaches are out of this world.
Sorry you’re sick, Jana. Nightmare! I’m a bit useless when I’m ill. Can’t do anything much of anything. I usually watch old films. And cuddle the cats. Until it passes. Wishing you health :0)
Oh, thank you! I love cuddling the kitties when I’m sick! They just seem to know you’re not feeling well. :)
I have gotten sick and have tried to read, but have difficulty remembering what I read. I have to read a paragraph three or four times in order to remember it.
I can read when I’m sick but I always prefer watching TV! Requires much less effort! Hope you get better soon! :)
Lucky girl! I usually end up watching TV, but I wish I had the option to read.
I am the exact same way! The last time I was sick, I watched two Seasons of Downton Abbey and White Christmas like 6 times… I remembered none of it.
So I understand completely.
Haha. I am SO glad I’m not the only one!
I have the hardest time reading or watching movies when I’m sick. This last time I was so sick my sister was reading Persuasion (Jane Austen) to me cause I couldn’t focus on the page myself!lol Feel better soon!
Thank you! What do you do if you can’t read OR watch TV?
I hope you feel better soon! You’re not alone. I have the same problem whenever I’m sick. I can’t focus and whenever I try to do anything, it all just goes wrong. Either I read the same page ten times.
Thank you! And YES. I have read the same page multiple times before. It’s so hard to concentrate!
I am the same. I usually put on movies that I’ve seen so I don’t actually have to know what’s going on. I always wish I could be reading, since I’m laying on the couch or just feeling yuck, but I sort of having this physical resistance to picking up a book. Weird I know, but glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t like to read when sick. Feel better!
Yeah, I frequently watch movies I’ve already seen. You’re not alone!
Oh no! Being sick is the worst, especially with summer approaching soon! I can never read while I’m sick. My attention span is smaller than a pea when I get sick. Sitting still and watching something is the only thing that I can focus.
I hope you feel better!
It really sucks to be sick when summer is upon us. Nobody should get sick during this time of year! I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t read when sick. I really thought I was weird. My mom reads a TON when she’s sick. All I can do is stare at the TV. :) Thanks for the healthy wishes!
Never, ever and it bugs the hell out of me b/c I’m lying here for the fourth day and still wondering what movie will I be choosing. I watched 2 last night and have no recollection of what I watched. 🤯
I’m so sorry you’re sick right now! I hope you feel better soon. I also struggle watching movies when I’m sick, so I usually pick old favorites. Then if I fall asleep or space out, I’m not missing anything important. Sending healing wishes to you!
Hi, my name is Sharon and I’m a reader for anyone stuck at home and can’t do this for themselves.
I too can not get any work done when I am sick and certainly not read the books in that condition. But I enjoy watching some television for sure.
I feel you – have been sick all weekend and unable to read and its soooo frustrating!
Same, friend. Not only this. It’s also when I’m tired. It’s hard to write when I’m sick too (and I am a semi professional writer). But being sick, OR fatigued… reading becomes hard. Even listening to an audiobook, the words start to sound garbled and hard to decipher. It overwhelms me trying to make sense of ot. Even short podcasts or educational videos, or an everyday conversation. The words seem hard to place and disorient me, because I don’t have the mental capacity to process them. I do have ASD, and I think this is a contributing factor. My mental processes just slow waaaaaay down. It is beyond frustrating, and even anxiety inducing.
It’s nice to know I’m not alone! I agree that it’s also really hard to write when you’re not feeling well! Focusing on anything is difficult. Very frustrating indeed.
