Top Ten Books I Meant to Read In 2017 But Didn’t Get To

Posted January 8, 2018 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 73 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted over at the other blog I write for, The Broke and the Bookish.

I suppose today’s post is kind of like a 2018 TBR? We’re talking about the books we had planned to read in 2017 but just didn’t get to for some reason. Sadly, my list is REALLY long because I fell into a major slump. I’m hoping 2018 is better to me, though! I’m excited about all the possibilities. I’m sharing with you 10 of the books I’m hoping to make a priority this year.

1. A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
I loooove this series, but when ACoWaR came out I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to read it. I tried to read it, but set it aside to finish later and never did. I really want to soon, though!

2. Greenglass House by Kate Milford
This sounds like the sweetest middle grade novel, perfect for winter time. I picked it up at ALA a few years ago and just never got to it. Now that the sequel has come out, I really want to read it!

3. The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan
I’ve heard great things and have been wanting to read this for quite some time now. It sounds like so much fun, and perfect for me right now.

4. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
I love these authors, love historical fiction, love the premise, and it has raving reviews. I MUST get to this one quickly.

5. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
This just sounds too cute to go unread.

6. Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
Rebel of the Sands was one of my favorite books last year, so I have no idea why I haven’t read this book yet.

7. Uprooted by Naomi Novik
I’ve been so intimidated by this book, and I don’t know why! It looks beautiful, it sounds beautiful, and it has gotten amazing reviews from the masses and from many people I trust. I need to just take the time and read it.

8. Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray
I loved A Thousand Pieces of You, but when this book came out I wasn’t in the mood and then I kept putting it off because it had been so long since the first book that I couldn’t remember what happened! And I don’t want to re-read… but I might have to. I really want to read this one and the third one!

9. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I’ve NEVER read this book, but I really want to. I love the BBC series and I love Mr. Darcy so I really want to read P&P finally!

10. Sleepless in Manhattan by Sarah Morgan
I love Sarah’s books, I loved Miracle On 5th Avenue (book #3 in this series), so I’m excited to read the rest of it!

Which books should I push to the very top of my list?
Which ones would you not recommend?
What books are you hoping to get to this year?

  1. I haven’t read any of these, but The Royal We always seems to get great reviews. It’s not my “typical” kind of book, but I’ve been tempted to check it out just because everyone seems to love it so much.

Also, the cover art for Ten Thousand Skies Above You is gorgeous! :-)

I’m a fan of Kate Middleton and Prince William, and The Royal We is supposed to be wonderful for people like me. lol

I love ALL the covers in Claudia’s trilogy!

    • Jana

Good luck with that! I’d love to be able to get through my unread books, too, but I’m not sure I’ll ever do it. lol

  2. I’m hoping to get around to reading Traitor To The Throne soon. My Lady Jane was fun but I didn’t like Uprooted. I liked Claudia Gray’s Evernight YA series but A Thousand Pieces of You was not for me, although I tried I wasn’t in the right frame of mind for it nor A Court of Wings and Ruin.

    • Jana

I’ve never read the Evernight series. I’m glad you liked My Lady Jane. I’m excited for it. I’ve heard that Uprooted is very hit or miss. I hope I like it more than you did!

    • Jana

I’ve heard it’s pretty silly and kind of turns history and literature on its head, so if you go into it hoping for something super serious and accurate you might be disappointed. It couldn’t hurt to give it a try!

    • Jana

Right, that’s probably going to be my relationship with P&P as well. I’ve started it and set it aside so many times, but I know I’ll be proud of myself for doing it once I have!

  3. Yes to The Royal We! I loved that one; if you are a Prince William/Kate Middleton fan, you’ll probably love it, too! My Lady Jane is on my list for this year, too!

    • Jana

Yeah, the cover for the next book is really pretty. I’ve heard mostly good things as well, but I’ve also heard that you either love it or hate it so I’m kind of worried. I hope we both love it!

  4. When Dimple Met Rishi was on my list too! My Lady Jane is seriously wonderful. It’s one of my favorite reads of 2017. I got it in an Owlcrate and I honestly wasn’t sure that I would like it because it’s historical-esque. But it did not matter one bit. It was the funniest book and done so well. I can’t wait for book 2!

    • Jana

I’m so glad to hear you loved My Lady Jane! It makes me more excited to read it. :) I hope you get to WDWR soon! I’ve heard such good things. :)

    • Jana

I’d heard from a few people that Traitor to the Throne was not so great, so I’m really glad to hear you loved it so much. :) I’m hoping to read it next!

    • Jana

Good to know! Thank you for the recommendation! I’m always more excited to read something when people tell me they liked it. :)

    • Jana

I still need to read Heir of Fire… lol. I am SO behind on the Throne of Glass series. I’ve sort of decided to make the ACOTAR series my priority for now and go back to ToG later on. It’s hard to keep track of it all!

    • Jana

I hope you get to all your books as well! I think I need to prioritize Dimple. Everyone keeps talking about it!

    • Jana

UGH, I honestly think that was part of why I wasn’t in the right frame of mine and ended up setting it aside. Hehe. I was just not up for the emotional trauma! ;’)

  5. OMG you haven’t read ACOWAR? I’ll admit I didn’t love it as much as I was hoping I would (and not nearly as much as I loved ACOMAF), but it was still good! So my vote is you should read that one next. :)

Uprooted is one I’ve been taking such a long time to get through, and I don’t know why! The writing’s lovely and the story is interesting, but I only got about halfway through it before I got distracted by something else. I need to come back to it this year.

    • Jana

I knooooooow… ACOWAR was my most anticipated of 2017! I honestly think I psyched myself out for it. lol. Soon, though!! I’m not sure anything could top ACOMAF… That was a golden book of swoon. I do think I’ll jump into ACOWAR after my current read.

Uprooted definitely seems like the kind of book that is beautiful but slow-ish… maybe? It just doesn’t seem to be the kind of read that’s jam-packed with all the good stuff to make you fly through it. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s kind of why I’ve been reluctant to jump in I think.

  6. ‘When Dimple Met Rishi’ is not in my top ten list, but its pretty close, maybe it would be number 11. I want to read it any time soon, too. ‘My Lady Jane’ is still on my wishlist, the series by Sarah J. Maas is one I should finally start.

The only book from your list I have already read is ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and that’s awesome. I absolutely loved reading it. So you should really push to the top of your list!

    • Jana

Oh, I HIGHLY recommend Sarah’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Some of my favorite books. :)

P&P is definitely towards the top of my list. I really want to read it soon. :)

  7. Pride and Prejudice will always be my first love – so obviously I’m biased and would like you to read it first! HAHA. Same with ACOWAR, I am even past the halfway point, but I just can’t seem to get into it, I think I kind of had enough of SJM’s writing at the moment? But I really need to this year, before I forget everything.

    • Jana

lol. You’re not the only one who is pushing P&P, so I think I need to read that one next.

Maybe that’s my issue with ACOWAR… I got to about 25% and then lost interest. I’ve taken a pretty long break, so I think I might be ready to try it again. I’m in the same boat as you with not wanting to forget everything. If I put it off for too long I just won’t end up reading it. lol

    • Jana

That’s really my main problem! I jumped into too many trilogies/series at the same time and I’m drowning in information I have to remember! :’) Hopefully we both finish some of ours this year. :)

    • Jana

I actually received an ARC for the second one, so I’ve got even more reasons to bump this up my TBR! I’m glad you liked it. :)

    • Jana

I need to go and look all of these up because I’ve never heard of them! I love it when people come here and introduce me to new books. :) Happy reading this year!

  8. I shed a bunch of tears during ACOWAR. It was good, but it’s not ACOMAF. WDMR is one of my 2017 faves! So cute! My Lady Jane is hilarious. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book. The Royal We, how I love that book! Just could not put it down once I started.

    • Jana

Oh no! Not the tears! I figured it wasn’t going to be as good as ACOMAF. Who could top that swoony masterpiece!?

I need to read WDMR and MLJ as soon as possible. And The Royal We, too! I’m so glad you liked al these books! It makes me more excited to read them!

  9. I’ve heard “The Royal We” is fun too! And as I do love a good contemporary romance, I may have to give it another look.

“My Lady Jane” has been on my TBR for eons now (or it feels this way) and I really did mean to read ‘Dimple’ this past year. It looks and sounds darling! Hope we both find some great reads in 2018. :)

Thanks so much for taking over Top Ten Tuesday, Jane. Excited to see what comes with this new era of fun book talk. :)

I hope we both get to read all our books soon!

And you’re welcome! I’m really excited to be the new TTT host. :)
