Welcome to another TTT! So, there’s this sickness I have that means that sometimes I will see a book or hear about a book and I simply MUST have it right then. So I make every effort to get an ARC or I enter all the giveaways or I buy it because the wait at the library is way too long, and then weeks/months/years go by and there it sits on my shelf. Unread. The book I had to have ASAP will then sit and mock me forever more. I think part of this has to do with the fact that I am a major mood reader. I have to be in the right mood for the right book or I will not enjoy it. Part of it also is probably the thrill of the hunt. If everyone is talking about a book and it’s highly anticipated and getting great early reviews, I must know what all the fuss is about and I must have that book too. Hype culture gets me a lot.
Anyway, I know I’m not the only person who does this so that’s where this week’s topic comes in to play! Today I’m sharing some of the books that sit unread, even though I moved Heaven and Earth to get them at the time. And, of course, my tastes in reading have changed significantly since I joined the online book community so I am only sharing the books I actually still want to read. Many have been weeded out and either deleted from my Kindle or donated through the years. I’m excited to see what you’re going to share this week, too!
1. Requiem by Lauren Oliver (acquired in December 2012)
I loved Delirium and Pandemonium, and my need for this final installment in the series was strong! I tried so hard to get an ARC of this, but was denied and had to preorder and WAIT FOREVER. I barely remember those first two books now, and I really don’t read YA anymore but my memories of these books are so strong that a part of me still really wants to read this one and finish the series. Also, apparently I own this book in Kindle, audio, and hardback so I sort of have to read one of them. LOL
2. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins (acquired in August 2014)
My story with this one is pretty much the same as above. I tried to get an ARC so badly and was denied, so I pre-ordered it. Anna and the French Kiss was my gateway book to contemporary romance. Up to this point, I only read mystery, dystopia, and fantasy. I fell in love with Anna and the French Kiss, and the rest was history. I still want to read Isla, but I’m afraid I won’t love it now that I’ve moved away from YA.
3. Impulse by Vanessa Garden (acquired in August 2014)
Oh my gosh, this book. Ok, long story. I went through an underwater phase for a while, and I requested the first book in this series, Captivate, on Netgalley. It would appear that I was accidentally approved for it by Harlequin Teen Australia. I say accidentally because a few months later, when Impulse was put on Netgalley, I got a decline email from the same publisher saying they wanted to give it to me but couldn’t because I live in the USA. I figured ok, no big deal. I’ll preorder it. Well, my friends, it was not being published in the USA! And book #1 ended on a huge cliffhanger. There was no way I could just not ever read it. So I imported it from a site I’ve never even heard of and paid way too much money to get it. A few years later it was published in the USA and since I still haven’t read it all these years later, I really could have waited and paid the couple dollars to get it on Kindle. Which, truth be told, I did anyway. So basically, I have to read this or my entire past is meaningless.
4. A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas (acquired in September 2016)
ACOTAR and ACOWAR are two of my favorite books, and I was falling all over myself with want for this book. I preordered it in two formats, re-read both ACOTAR and ACOWAR in preparation, and then never read this.
5. Something Wilder by Christina Lauren (141 days ago)
Ok. I know this only came out today. But seriously, this is my most anticipated book of 2022. Christina Lauren is my FAVORITE. I received an ARC 141 days ago (a party ensued) and I have been SO EXCITED to read this! And I haven’t! This feels so wrong and I am ashamed. I blame Lisa Kleypas.
Which books did you just have to have, yet are still unread?
And here I was thinking I’m the only one who *hasn’t* read Isla’s story yet. Glad to know I’m not alone there! :)
I’m honestly worried it’s not going to do the same thing for me the other two books did since I’ve waited SO LONG!
Great list with interesting books. I thought having a book I was excited about for 10 months but still haven’t read was bad, but you reassured me: I’m not alone! I can’t wait to read everybody’s take on this prompt.

Thrilled – but in a good way – that your oldest book is older than my oldest! Exercises like this reminds me how time flies.I cannot believe how long some of my books have been waiting. I feel bad for them now, sitting forgotten and thinking they’re unloved…
You’re so right, time really does fly. Especially in the book world when so many new shiny books get released practically every day! It’s hard to keep up!
Omg! Impulse! I still need to read this too and suffered some of the same you did, though I didn’t look real hard to find it. I did re-buy the entire series when it was published in the US…but I still need to read it. At this point I will be re-reading the first book since it’s been too long since I read it. I thought I would try reading the prequel first, then dive back into the trilogy!
I ended up starting my list back in the beginning from my adding to Goodreads and didn’t get as far as this one since I bought it just a few years ago! Lol.

Wow, I never hear anyone talking about Captivate and the rest of the series so this is so fun for me! I definitely need to read Captivate again before continuing on, I’ve just been scared that the magic of that first book won’t be the same now that I’ve gotten older and my tastes have changed. I don’t want to ruin the memories!
I loved A Court of Wings and Ruin. My favourite was A Court of Mist and Fury though if I had to pick one!

I had three library holds including Something Wilder come available to me yesterday but I’m determined to get my Netgalley reads completed for the next couple of weeks before I read it. It took a lot of will power let me tell you! Thanks for sharing!

I’m the same way! It seems like as soon as I own a much-anticipated book, I forget I ever wanted to read it. Bizarre. I think, like you said, a lot of it has to do with hype and the thrill of the chase. Glad I’m not alone!

I have more books that fall into this category than I care to admit. I just get too distracted by all the shiny new books to read haha. One that I still swear I’m going to get to one of these days is The Night Circus. Everyone raved about it, I bought it, and it has been waiting on my shelf ever since!
Oh my gosh, I am in the same boat with you on The Night Circus. I should have added that to my list this week, but didn’t even think of it! I wanted that book SO BAD, and it was so pricey and my library didn’t have it available in any reasonable time frame. So I scoured the internet for a used copy and finally found one that I could afford. A true triumph. Have I read it yet? No. Thanks for the reminder! I think I need to go for it in the next few months.

I have many books that fall into this category languishing on my TBR shelves. I am super excited about them, I get copies, they sit on my shelf. Sometimes for years. I think I get distracted by the next shiny object.
This is a post I could totally have joined in on and would probably have a top 20 or more! The Requiem is one that would be included. I think I did a discussion post similar to this about series I didn’t know if I’d ever get around to finishing. Fun post!
