Top Ten Reasons Why I Love Reading

Posted July 5, 2021 by Jana in About Me, Top Ten Tuesday / 16 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic focuses on reading instead of books, and asks why I love reading! This is going to be EASY.

1. The escape.
I love escaping reality and being engrossed in a completely different time, place, and/or world. And it’s been especially nice to escape the craziness of covid and travel to places where it doesn’t exist.

2. I get to travel to someplace new.
I love visiting places I’ve never been! Books are the cheapest way to see the world.

3. To make friends.
I’ve read about so many characters I’d love to be friends with! And I always miss those friends when a book or series ends. The book community has also brought me many friends, so that’s also cool!

4. To fall in love.
Much like the reason above, I love all my book boyfriends.

5. Reading makes you smarter!
AND it sets off the imagination.

6. Books are pretty.
I love all the pretty covers and putting my favorites on my bookshelves. My room looks beautiful with all my books.

7. It’s the best way to fall asleep.
I love laying in bed in the dark and reading books on my Kindle, all cozied up under the covers. It’s my favorite part of the day.

8. The memories.
Every time I see a book I loved, I smile and remember my reading experience.

9. Sometimes a story will change your life.

10. I love learning.
I love learning about people who are different than I am, places I’ve never visited, cultures I’m not familiar with, and different ways of thinking.

It was hard to narrow this list down to just ten, but that’s part of the challenge of TTT!
Why do you love reading?

Top Ten Most Anticipated Book Releases of the Second Half of 2021

Posted June 28, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 25 Comments

Before I get into this week’s topic, I wanted to thank everyone again for the birthday wishes you sent me last week! I received so many lovely comments here and on Twitter. I believe I thanked you all personally on last week’s post, but thank you again just in case! I also wanted to thank those of you who granted some of my bookish wishes. I woke up Tuesday morning to an inbox full of Kindle books, and I received a couple physical books in the mail as well! Thank you, thank you. I found as many of you as I could on Twitter, but there were a couple people I couldn’t find (mentioned below). I’m thanking everyone who sent me something right here, though, to make sure you all see it. Kait @ Kait Plus Books, Dedra @ A Book Wanderer, Cindy @ Cindy’s Book Corner, S van Niekerk (I couldn’t find you online, so I hope you see this!), Deb Nance @ Readerbuzz, Abigail @ Rambling Writer, Nicole @ BookWyrmKnits, Lisa @ Lisa Loves Literature, Reinvented Reader, Heather @ The Frozen Library, Helen Murdoch, Jennifer @ Introverted Reader, and April (I don’t know which April, so please tell me who you are if you see this!)… Thank you! You made my birthday extra special this year. :)

I loved seeing how so many of you granted the bookish wishes of others! There was so much cheer spread in the book community, and it was such a fun way to celebrate my birthday with all of you. Thank you for participating in this topic with me. Let me know in the comments if you’d like to do this bookish wishes topic again in the future… maybe around Christmas?

Now, on to this week’s topic! Welcome to another TTT! Can you believe the year is half over?? I can’t! Which books are releasing between now and the end of the year that you’re really excited about? I apologize in advance to what my list is going to do to your TBR… Also… would I even be Jana if this list wasn’t heavy on the Christmas books?

1. How Sweet It Is by Dylan Newton (July 13, 2021)

What happens when the queen of romance falls for the king of horror–you get a “laugh-out-loud” romantic comedy, perfect for fans of Beach Rea d. (Kirkus, starred review)

Event planner Kate Sweet is famous for creating the perfect happily-ever-after moment for her clients’ dream weddings. So how is it that her best friend has roped her into planning a bestselling horror writer’s book launch extravaganza? But the second Kate meets—or rather, accidentally maims—the drop-dead-hot Drake Matthews, her well-ordered life quickly transforms into an absolute nightmare.

Drake Matthews is tired of the spotlight and tired of his reputation as the Knight of Nightmares. He’s really a nice guy! But he’s not prepared for Kate, a fearless agent of chaos in steel-tipped stilettos, or for that sweet sting of attraction he feels for her. She’s inspiring him to take his writing in a whole new direction—one that no one expects. Because now Kate and Drake are changing up the rules, and this plot twist might just surprise everyone . . . including themselves.

2. The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn (August 24, 2021)

In this steamy tale by USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn, an American searching for her purpose escapes to a Scottish town but finds more questions than answers when she meets a brooding yet handsome handyman.

Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move.

When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American—even if she is a bonny lass.

As Bonnie and Rowan’s paths inevitably cross, insults—and sparks—fly. Can the pair build on their similarities to help each other find purpose and direction…and maybe romance too? Or will their passionate tempers fling them apart?

3. The Name Curse by Brooke Burroughs (August 31, 2021)

In this flirty wilderness adventure by the author of The Marriage Code, two hikers who drive each other crazy discover they might have a lot to learn from one another about navigating life, love, and living up to family expectations.

Ever since her father died, Bernie’s life has been stagnant. When concerned friends and family suggest she join a hike through Alaska to gain new perspective, Bernie reluctantly agrees to go, even though she’s never been the adventurous type, unlike her namesake, Great-Aunt Bernice.

Matthew is a struggling screenwriter who needs a week off the grid to gain some inspiration for a new project and to process the reappearance of his absent father.

When the two meet at the trailhead, it’s annoyance at first sight. He’s dismayed to discover that he’ll have to share a tent with Bernie, who doesn’t know the first thing about camping, while she finds he’s a little too into “roughing it” to be a reasonable human being. But as they’re forced to hike through the wilderness together, their relationship becomes a surprising source of empathy and inspiration…and maybe other feelings too. Can the two adversaries find the path to breaking the curse of family expectations—and each other?

4. Eight Perfect Hours by Lia Louis (September 28, 2021)

On a snowy evening in March, thirty-something Noelle Butterby is on her way back from an event at her old college when disaster strikes. With a blizzard closing off roads, she finds herself stranded, alone in her car, without food, drink, or a working charger for her phone.

All seems lost until Sam Attwood, a handsome American stranger also trapped in a nearby car, knocks on her window and offers assistance. What follows is eight perfect hours together, until morning arrives and the roads finally clear. The two strangers part, positive they’ll never see each other again but fate, it seems, has a different plan. As the two keep serendipitously bumping into one another, they begin to realize that perhaps there truly is no such thing as coincidence.

With plenty of charming twists and turns and Lia Louis’s “bold, standout voice” (Gillian McAllister, author of The Good Sister), Eight Perfect Hours is a gorgeously crafted novel that will make you believe in the power of fate.

5. The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer (September 28, 2021)

Oy! to the world

Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade she’s hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach.

But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkah’s not magical. It’s not merry. It’s not Christmas. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachel’s determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemy—Jacob Greenberg.

Though Rachel and Jacob haven’t seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkah—and Jacob—in a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.

6. Meet Me in London by Georgia Toffolo (September 28, 2021)

Fans of Josie Silver’s One Day in December and Christina Lauren’s In a Holidaze will adore watching Victoria and Oliver’s pretend engagement dissolve as their very real chemistry threatens to upend all their carefully laid-out secrets. Set against the most charming London backdrop, Meet Me in London is an irrisistable seasonal treat!

What do you do when your fake engagement starts to feel too real…

Aspiring clothes designer Victoria Scott spends her days working in a bar in Chelsea and her evenings designing vintage clothes, dreaming of one day opening her own boutique. But these aspirations are under threat from the new department store opening at the end of her road. She needs a Christmas miracle, but one is not forthcoming.

Oliver Russell’s Christmas is not looking very festive right now. His family’s new London department store opening is behind schedule, and on top of that his interfering, if well-meaning, mother is pressing him to introduce his girlfriend to her over the holidays—a girlfriend who does not exist. He needs a diversion…something to keep his mother from meddling while he focuses on the business.

When Oliver meets Victoria, he offers a proposition: pretend to be his girlfriend at the opening of his store and he will provide an opportunity for Victoria to showcase her designs. But what starts as a business arrangement soon becomes something more tempting as the fake relationship starts to feel very real. But when secrets in Victoria’s past are exposed, will Oliver walk away, or will they both follow their hearts and find what neither knew they were looking for…?

7. A Holly Jolly Diwali by Sonya Lalli (October 5, 2021)

One type-A data analyst discovers her free-spirited side on an impulsive journey from bustling Mumbai to the gorgeous beaches of Goa and finds love waiting for her on Christmas morning.

Twenty-nine-year-old Niki Randhawa has always made practical decisions. Despite her love for music and art, she became an analyst for the stability. She’s always stuck close to home, in case her family needed her. And she’s always dated guys that seem good on paper, rather than the ones who give her butterflies. When she’s laid off, Niki realizes that practical hasn’t exactly paid off for her. So for the first time ever, she throws caution to the wind and books a last-minute flight for her friend Diya’s wedding.

Niki arrives in India just in time to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, where she meets London musician Sameer Mukherji. Maybe it’s the splendor of Mumbai or the magic of the holiday season, but Niki is immediately drawn to Sam. At the wedding, the champagne flows and their flirtatious banter makes it clear that the attraction is mutual.

When Niki and Sam join Diya, her husband and their friends on a group honeymoon, their connection grows deeper. Free-spirited Sam helps Niki get in touch with her passionate and creative side, and with her Indian roots. When she gets a new job offer back home, Niki must decide what she wants out of the next chapter of her life–to cling to the straight and narrow like always, or to take a leap of faith and live the kind of bold life the old Niki never would have dreamed of.

8. The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling (October 5, 2021)

New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, writing as Erin Sterling, casts a spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong.

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

9. Donut Fall in Love by Jackie Lau (October 26, 2021)

A baker provides the sweetest escape for an actor in this charming romantic comedy.

Actor Ryan Kwok is back in Toronto after the promotional tour for his latest film, a rom-com that is getting less-than-stellar reviews. After the sudden death of his mother and years of constant work, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn’t know how to talk to his dad—who now trolls him on Twitter instead of meeting him for dim sum.

Innovative baker Lindsay McLeod meets Ryan when he knocks over two dozen specialty donuts at her bakery. Their relationship is off to a messy start, but there’s no denying their immediate attraction. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity episode of Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake and she agrees.

As Lindsay and Ryan spend time together, bonding over grief and bubble tea, it starts to feel like they’re cooking up something sweeter than cupcakes in the kitchen.

10. Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens (November 9, 2021)

From the New York Times bestselling author of This Time Next Year comes a heartwarming and hilarious tale that asks: What if you pick up the wrong suitcase in an airport, only to fall head over heels for its unseen owner?

Laura’s business trip to the Channel Islands isn’t exactly off to a great start. After unceremoniously dumping everything in her bag in front of the most attractive man she’s ever seen in real life, she arrives at her hotel only to realize she’s grabbed the wrong suitcase from the airport. Her only consolation? The irresistibly appealing contents of the case: a copy of her favorite book; piano music; and a rugged, heavy knit fisherman sweater only a Ryan Gosling lookalike could pull off. The owner of this suitcase is Laura’s dream man–she’s sure of it. Now, all she has to do is find him.

The mix-up seems written in the stars. After all, what are the odds that she’d find The One on the same remote island where her mom and dad had first fallen in love, especially as she sets out to write an article about their epic romance? Commissioning surly cab driver Ted to ferry her around seems like her best bet in both tracking down the mystery suitcase owner and retracing her parents’ footsteps. And if beneath Ted’s gruffness lies a wit that makes their cab rides strangely entertaining, so much the better. But as Laura’s long-lost luggage soulmate proves difficult to find–and as she realizes that the love story she’s held on a pedestal all her life might not have been that perfect–she’ll have to rethink her whole outlook on love to discover what she really wants.

Top Ten Bookish Wishes

Posted June 21, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 57 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! Today is my birthday, and since I love to spread joy around the book community (see #GiftmasInJuly and #TBTBSanta, both of which I host) I thought it would so much fun to grant bookish wishes!

This is a popular thing to do on Twitter these days. People will tweet out a call for wishlists, people will link theirs, and  then everyone starts granting wishes. It’s so much fun to surprise someone with a little something. Today we’re doing the same thing, but we’ll be blog hopping! List the top 10 books you’d love to own and include a link to your wishlist so that people can grant your wish. Make sure you link your wishlist to your mailing address [here’s how to do it on Amazon] or include the email address associated with your ereader in the list description so people know how to get the book to you. After you post, jump around the Linky and grant a wish or two if you’d like. Please don’t feel obligated to send anything to anyone! Here are my top ten bookish wishes (my wishlist link is down below)!

1. On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn
I am flying through the Bridgertons series, and this final book is the only one left that I don’t own!

2. The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After by Julia Quinn
This book contains a novella about Violet, the mother of the Bridgerton family (I adore this woman). It also has second epilogues for all the other books, which provide updates on all the couples I’ve fallen in love with.

3. Christmas at Fireside Cabins by Jenny Hale
I love Christmas romances! This one takes place at a little resort in the hills of Tennessee and sounds lovely.

4. Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan
A hockey playing hero with a love of cooking! A few of my friends have mentioned loving this, and I’m pretty excited about it.

5. The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent
This one just sounds so funny, and I am living for rom coms these days!

6. Doctor Grumpy by Ellie Rowe
Fake dating! My favorite trope ever!

7. A Christmas Spark by Cindy Steel
A snowed-in-together-at-Christmas romance! I seriously live for these kinds of stories.

8. Perky by Julia Kent
I read and loved Fluffy (and the prequel novella, Little Miss Perfect) earlier this year, and can’t wait to read Perky’s story!

9. Master Baker by Pippa Grant
He. Is. A. Baker. *swoon*

10. The Fortunate Ones by R.S. Grey
R.S. Grey is one of my favorite authors, and this romantic comedy featuring a cabana girl and a rich tech mogul who frequents the exclusive country club she works at just sounds so summery and fun.

Here is the link to my Amazon wishlist. It’s full of many titles I’d love to read someday!

Please let me know if you grant any wishes or have any wishes granted of your own! I love the serotonin boost that comes with seeing people happy.

What’s one book you’re really excited to get your hands on someday?

If you’re not participating in TTT this week (maybe you don’t have a blog or didn’t know this topic was happening), please link your wishlist in the comments so people can still come grant a wish of yours!

Top Ten Books On My Summer 2021 To-Read List

Posted June 14, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 28 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! I can’t believe it’s already time for summer’s TBR, but here were are! And it was a whopping 103 degrees (fahrenheit) here today, the hottest day of 2021 so far, so this works out well. I’m still very much in love with all the rom-coms, but I’m throwing in a variety of titles because I need variety!

I am flying through the Bridgertons series by Julia Quinn, so I couldn’t possibly leave off the next two in the series, although let’s be honest… I bet I’ll finish the entire series by Fall. But I’ll just keep it to two on this list.

1. To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia Quinn

Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he’d proposed, figuring that she’d be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except… she wasn’t. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her…and more.

Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn’t marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking…and wondering… and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except…he wasn’t. Her perfect husband wouldn’t be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled…and when he kissed her…the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn’t help but wonder…could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

2. When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn

Everything was so much simpler… when he was wicked.

In every life there is a turning point. A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breathtaking, that one knows one’s life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London’s most infamous rake, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton.

After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca’s surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer—the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin.

But that was then… Now Michael is the earl and Francesca is free, but still she thinks of him as nothing other than her dear friend and confidant. Michael dares not speak to her of his love… until one dangerous night, when she steps innocently into his arms, and passion proves stronger than even the most wicked of secrets…

3. Survive the Night by Riley Sager

It’s November 1991. George H. W. Bush is in the White House, Nirvana’s in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father. Or so he says. Like the Hitchcock heroine she’s named after, Charlie has her doubts. There’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t seem to want Charlie to see inside the car’s trunk. As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there’s nowhere to run. In order to win, Charlie must do one thing–survive the night.

I love road trip books, especially during the summer when I usually travel with my family. Perhaps an armchair road trip will scratch that itch since I’m not at all comfortable traveling yet.

4. The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary

Two exes reach a new level of awkward when forced to take a road trip together in this endearing and humorous novel by the author of the international bestseller The Flatshare.

What if the end of the road is just the beginning?

Four years ago, Dylan and Addie fell in love under the Provence sun. Wealthy Oxford student Dylan was staying at his friend Cherry’s enormous French villa; wild child Addie was spending her summer as the on-site caretaker. Two years ago, their relationship officially ended. They haven’t spoken since.

Today, Dylan’s and Addie’s lives collide again. It’s the day before Cherry’s wedding, and Addie and Dylan crash cars at the start of the journey there. The car Dylan was driving is wrecked, and the wedding is in rural Scotland–he’ll never get there on time by public transport.

So, along with Dylan’s best friend, Addie’s sister, and a random guy on Facebook who needed a ride, they squeeze into a space-challenged Mini and set off across Britain. Cramped into the same space, Dylan and Addie are forced to confront the choices they made that tore them apart–and ask themselves whether that final decision was the right one after all.

5. Float Plan by Trish Doller

Critically acclaimed author Trish Doller’s unforgettable and romantic adult debut about setting sail, starting over, and finding yourself…

Since the loss of her fiancé, Anna has been shipwrecked by grief—until a reminder goes off about a trip they were supposed to take together. Impulsively, Anna goes to sea in their sailboat, intending to complete the voyage alone.

But after a treacherous night’s sail, she realizes she can’t do it by herself and hires Keane, a professional sailor, to help. Much like Anna, Keane is struggling with a very different future than the one he had planned. As romance rises with the tide, they discover that it’s never too late to chart a new course.

In Trish Doller’s unforgettable Float Plan, starting over doesn’t mean letting go of your past, it means making room for your future.

No summer of mine is complete without a book by Mary! Luckily I haven’t made it through her backlist yet, and I’m already panicking about when that day comes since she passed away last year. I love her stories!

6. While My Pretty One Sleeps by Mary Higgins Clark

Neeve Kearny may be the only person in New York worried about the disappearance of Ethel Lambston. Ethel, a bestselling author famous for her juicy exposés, is one of the best customers at Neeve’s exclusive Madison Avenue boutique. But Ethel’s ex-husband, her parasitical nephew, and the fashion moguls skewered in her latest article all have reason to be glad she’s no longer around.

When Ethel Lambston is found with her throat cut, Neeve’s memories of her mother’s long-unsolved murder loom up once again. Now as an innocent witness in the Lambston investigation, Neeve is drawn into a new nightmare . . . a sinister labyrinth of greed and ambition that will lead her into mortal danger. . . .

7. To Sir, with Love by Lauren Layne

Love Is Blind meets You’ve Got Mail in this laugh-out-loud romantic comedy following two thirty-somethings who meet on a blind dating app—only to realize that their online chemistry is nothing compared to their offline rivalry.

Perpetually cheerful and eager to please, Gracie Cooper strives to make the best out of every situation. So when her father dies just months after a lung cancer diagnosis, she sets aside her dreams of pursuing her passion for art to take over his Midtown Manhattan champagne shop. She soon finds out that the store’s profit margins are being squeezed perilously tight, and complicating matters further, a giant corporation headed by the impossibly handsome, but irritatingly arrogant Sebastian Andrews is proposing a buyout. But Gracie can’t bear the thought of throwing away her father’s dream like she did her own.

Overwhelmed and not wanting to admit to her friends or family that she’s having second thoughts about the shop, Gracie seeks advice and solace from someone she’s never met—the faceless “Sir”, with whom she connected on a blind dating app where matches get to know each other through messages and common interests before exchanging real names or photos.

But although Gracie finds herself slowly falling for Sir online, she has no idea she’s already met him in real life…and they can’t stand each other.

8. The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn

9. Too Good to Be Real by Melonie Johnson

She plans to prove there’s a dozen reasons why life isn’t like a romantic comedy, only to discover the one reason it is…

While her friends wish for meet cutes worthy of their favorite rom-coms, Julia is ready to give up on love. Swiping right has replaced getting swept off your feet and good old-fashioned romance has become, well, old-fashioned.

A writer for a popular website, love becomes the last thing on her mind when impending layoffs threaten her job. As Julia searches for the ultimate pitch to impress her boss, she stumbles upon a resort offering guests a chance to live out their romantic comedy dreams. Real life dating is so bleak, who wouldn’t want to spend a week in a fantasy rom-com world with your best friends?

At the resort, Julia literally falls into a not-quite-meet-cute involving an aggressive seagull and an adorably awkward guy named Luke who is also participating in the rom-com experience. Julia hides the fact she is there to do a story, but Luke harbors a few secrets of his own. Among further encounters with thieving seagulls, a gaggle of corgis, kisses in the rain, and even a karaoke serenade, their feelings deepen quickly. But could their love be real when they haven’t been honest about their true identities? Once the fantasy is over, can they have a relationship in the real world?

10. Hostage by Clare Mackintosh

You can save hundreds of lives. Or the one that matters most.

A claustrophobic thriller set over twenty hours on one airplane flight, with the heart-stopping tension of The Last Flight and the wrenching emotional intensity of RoomHostage takes us on board the inaugural nonstop flight from London to Sydney.

Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant, not the problems of her five-year-old daughter back home, or the fissures in her marriage. But the plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling note from an anonymous passenger, someone intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination. Someone who needs Mina’s assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply.

It’s twenty hours to landing. A lot can happen in twenty hours.

Top Ten Books I Loved that Sent Me Searching for More

Posted June 7, 2021 by Jana in Top Ten Tuesday / 14 Comments

Welcome to another TTT! Have you ever you read a book and immediately wanted more just like it, perhaps in the same genre, about the same topic or theme, by the same author, etc? I once read a medical romance and then went to find more because it was so good. I’ve discovered new authors I loved and then devoured everything else they’d ever written. I’ve read books set in a location I wanted to read more books set in. I love it when books make me want to read more books, and I think this phenomenon should be celebrated when it happens! So here we go!

The Gem Thief by Sian Ann Bessey
This book made me want more books with heists and also books with luxury travel.

Hotshot Doc by R.S. Grey
Hotshot Doc made me want more workplace romances that take place in hospitals or doctors offices!

Catherine and the Pirate by Karen Hawkins
This was my first pirate romance, and I fell in love with pirates and romances set on pirate ships because of it.

Till Death by Jennifer Armentrout
This is an amazing romantic suspense, and after I finished it I immediately wanted more romantic suspense titles.

I Temporarily Do by Ellie Cahill
The fauxmance! This is one of the first fake dating books I read, and we all know I’ve read as many as possible ever since.

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
This made me want to read all of Riley’s other books AND find more books set in creepy buildings.

The Caged Graves by Dianne K. Salerni
This made me want more spooky, southern Gothic novels.

Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare
This was my first Tessa Dare book, and started me in on ALLLL her others! I’ve almost read her entire catalog now!

Starry Night by Debbie Macomber
This book made me want more books set in Alaska.

On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves
This book made me fall in love with survival stories!

What books have you read and then gone off to find more like them?
Can you recommend any other books I might like based on my picks above?
